In Search Of Legitimacy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Every year, countless young adults from affluent, Western nations travel to Brazil to train in capoeira, the dance/martial art form that is one of the most visible strands of the Afro-Brazilian cultural tradition. In Search of Legitimacy explores why “first world” men and women leave behind their jobs, families, and friends to pursue a strenuous training regimen in a historically disparaged and marginalized practice. Using the concept of apprenticeship pilgrimage—studying with a local master at a historical point of origin—the author examines how non-Brazilian capoeiristas learn their art and claim legitimacy while navigating the complexities of wealth disparity, racial discrimination, and cultural appropriation.

Stop And Search And Police Legitimacy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

‘Stop and search’ is a form of police-citizen interaction that is confrontational, often stressful for those involved, and potentially damaging to the relationship between police and public. The extent to which police officers use their power to stop and perhaps search members of the public is intimately linked not only to the present-day context of policing but also to longer term patterns in the aims of policing, the ends used to achieve them, and ultimately to the ideology of policing in England and Wales. Stop and Search and Police Legitimacy draws upon both police-administrative and survey-based data to examine what has for many years been one of the most highly charged and contested aspects of police practice. Taking a decidedly quantitative, empirical, approach, this book examines the patterning of police stops over social and geographic space, the problem of ethnic disproportionality, and the evidence concerning how people experience and react to being stopped by police – particularly in relation to issues of fairness, legitimacy, cooperation and compliance. A further important concern is the extent to which this form of police practice shapes and re-shapes the identities of those affected by it. This ground-breaking study is a comprehensive resource for students and scholars in the fields of criminology, sociology, social policy, ethnic and racial studies and human rights. It will also be of special interest to police leaders and policy-makers.

The Search For A Cold War Legitimacy Foreign Policy And Tito S Yugoslavia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Titoist Yugoslavia is a particularly interesting setting to examine the integrity of the modern nation-state, especially the viability of distinctly multi-ethnic nation-building projects. Scholarly literature on the brutal civil wars that destroyed Yugoslavia during the 1990s emphasizes divisive nationalism and dysfunctional politics to explain why the state disintegrated. But the larger question remains unanswered—just how did Tito’s state function so successfully for the preceding forty-six years. In an attempt to understand better what united the stable, multi-ethnic, and globally important Yugoslavia that existed before 1991 Robert Niebuhr argues that we should pay special attention to the dynamic and robust foreign policy that helped shape the Cold War.

Laws Of Rise And Demise

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Rise and demise of nations are man-made and can be humanly controlled. These are neither naturally determined nor divinely fated. This book captures the root-process presiding over the problems, challenges, and the opportunities nations of the world face today. America has a three-dimensional problem. Its “process controls” have equated its “purpose controls.” Internally, it has developed “integration energy traps.” Externally, it has created a dangerously “interest-based” world order. America must move to the “next level” of human collectivity; or an Armageddon might hit us all within the next few decades. The Muslims’ “idea of State” is too “invalid”, “antiquated” and perilously “anti-liberty” to allow large political systems to evolve in the Islamic world. It has been incessantly sinking back into anarchy. The “Arab Spring” is continuation of medieval, chaotic and “identity-based” shift of power, devoid of “value” and “political mass”. With the given trends, the world must be ready for more Talibans, Bin Ladens, and Al-Qaedas, possibly equipped with weapons of mass destruction. India and China have big “N-factor”. But at controls level, unsustainability afflicts China and an age-old “identity clamp” is failing India. Both nations will see reversals in near future. China must realize that “economic future” is a component of “political future”; not the other way round. India must understand that democracy divorced from political creativity leads back to tyranny and anarchy. The basis of the entire debate is “Integration Energy Theory” which explains the reality of human togetherness in a timeless and non-spatial manner.
