This volume contains translations of papers that originally appeared in the Japanese journal, Sugaku. Ordinarily the papers would appear in the AMS translation of that journal, but to expedite publication, the Society has chosen to publish them as a volume of selected papers. The papers range over a variety of topics, including nonlinear partial differential equations, $C*$-algebras, and Schrodinger operators. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in analysis and differential equations.

Among the finest achievements in modern mathematics are two of L.S. Pontryagin's most notable contributions: Pontryagin duality and his general theory of characters of a locally compact commutative group. This book, the first in a four-volume set, contains the most important papers of this eminent mathematician, those which have influenced many generations of mathematicians worldwide. They chronicle the development of his work in many areas, from his early efforts in homology groups, duality theorems, and dimension theory to his later achievements in homotopic topology and optimal control theory. On 3 September 1983 Lev Semenovich Pontryagin was seventy-five. To mark this important event in the life of this outstanding contemporary mathematician we are beginning the publication of his scientific works in four volumes, according to a decision taken by the Mathematics Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The first volume contains the most important mathematical papers of L. S. Pontryagin and also includes a bibliography of his basic scientific works, the second is his well-known monograph Topological Groups, the third comprises two monographs, Foundations of Algebraic Topology and Smooth Manifolds and Their Applications in Homotopy Theory, and the fourth is a revised edition of The Mathematical Theory of Optimal Processes by L. S. Pontryagin, V. G. Boltyanskii, R. V. Gamkrelidze, and E. F. Mishchenko.

Eugene Dynkin is a rare example of a contemporary mathematician who has achieved outstanding results in two quite different areas of research: algebra and probability. In both areas, his ideas constitute an essential part of modern mathematical knowledge and form a basis for further development. Although his last work in algebra was published in 1955, his contributions continue to influence current research in algebra and in the physics of elementary particles. His work in probability is part of both the historical and the modern development of the topic. This volume presents Dynkin's scientific contributions in both areas. Included are Commentary by recognized experts in the corresponding fields who describe the time, place, role, and impact of Dynkin's research and achievements. Biographical notes and the recollections of his students are also featured.This book is jointly published by the AMS and the International Press.

The theory of nonlinear oscillations and stability of motion is a fundamental part of the study of numerous real world phenomena. These phenomena, particularly auto-oscillations of the first and second kind, capture, para metric, subharmonic and ultraharmonic resonance, asymptotic behavior and orbits' stability, constitute the core of problems treated in "Nonlinear Mechanics", and their study is connected with the names of H. Poincare, A. M. Lyapunov, N. M. Krylov and N. N. Bogolyubov. Professor Demetrios Magiros, a widely known scientist in the theories of oscillations and nonlinear differential equations, has devoted his numerous works to this significant part of modern physical science. His scientific results can be classified in the following way: I) creation of methods of analysis of subharmonic resonances under the nonlinear effect, 2) determination and analysis of the main modes of nonlinear oscillations on the basis of infinite determinants, 3) analysis of problems of celestial mechanics, 4) classification of stability of solutions of dynamic systems concepts, 5) mathematical analogs of physical and social systems. He has developed new methods and solutions for a great number of difficult problems of nonlinear mechanics making a significant contri bution to the theory and applications of the field. Urgency, depth of perception of the considered phenomena, and practi cal directness are characteristics of his work.

This volume presents a collection of selected papers by the prominent Brazilian mathematician Djairo G. de Figueiredo, who has made significant contributions in the area of Differential Equations and Analysis. His work has been highly influential as a challenge and inspiration to young mathematicians as well as in development of the general area of analysis in his home country of Brazil. In addition to a large body of research covering a variety of areas including geometry of Banach spaces, monotone operators, nonlinear elliptic problems and variational methods applied to differential equations, de Figueiredo is known for his many monographs and books. Among others, this book offers a sample of the work of Djairo, as he is commonly addressed, advancing the study of superlinear elliptic problems (both scalar and system cases), including questions on critical Sobolev exponents and maximum principles for non-cooperative elliptic systems in Hamiltonian form.

In recognition of professor Shiing-Shen Chern’s long and distinguished service to mathematics and to the University of California, the geometers at Berkeley held an International Symposium in Global Analysis and Global Geometry in his honor in June 1979. The output of this Symposium was published in a series of three separate volumes, comprising approximately a third of Professor Chern’s total publications up to 1979. Later, a fourth volume was published, focusing on papers written during the Eighties. This second volume comprises selected papers written between 1932 and 1965.
