Britain, long revered for its choral music and partsongs, had largely neglected art songs since the Elizabethan era. The middle of the nineteenth century witnessed efforts to revive the genre, particularly in the works of Sir C. Hubert Parry and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. The following generation, including the Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn (1868–1916), built on the foundations laid by Parry and Stanford and served as the bridge to the vocal music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Edward Elgar, Ivor Gurney, John Ireland, and ultimately Benjamin Britten. Though best known for his Scottish-influenced compositions, MacCunn composed over 100 songs that, free from national constraints, are some of the most refined and sophisticated examples of his music. Almost no modern editions of MacCunn’s song exist, though many were published during the composer’s lifetime. The current two-part edition presents the composer’s 102 extant songs. Part 1 contains 53 individual songs; Part 2 presents the songs that were first published as small collections.

The third concert etude in D-flat major from Liszt's Trois etudes de concert will challenge advanced pianists with its constant hand-crossings and varying number of cascading notes per measure in the accompaniment. A lovely pentatonic melody is embedded in the rolling arpeggio-like patterns, frequently played by alternating hands throughout the piece. Keeping this cantando melodic line distinct and phrased while transparently maintaining the flowing accompaniment is the primary challenge of this masterwork. In contrast to the numerous flashy "variations brilliantes" of the time, Mendelssohn composed his Variations sérieuses (Serious Variations) during the summer of 1841. These variations are considered to be among Mendelssohn's greatest works for solo piano. Vorschule Im Klavierspiel, Op. 101, by Ferdinand Beyer (1803--1863) was first published in 1860. Since that time, it has been used by piano students throughout the world, especially in Asian countries. When compared with piano methods written in the 20th and 21st centuries, it appears more like a technique book than a piano method. This edition has been edited to be useful for today's piano students, either as a method (with teacher guidance) or as a supplementary book.
