This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Semantics in Data and Knowledge Bases, SDKB 2010, held in Bordeaux, France in July 2010. The 6 revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors were carefully reviewed and selected during two rounds of revision and improvement. The papers reflect a variety of approaches to semantics in data and knowledge bases.

The emergence of new paradigms for data management raises a variety of exciting challenges. An important goal of database theory is to answer these challenges by providing sound foundations for the development of the field. This volume contains the papers selected for the third International Conference on Database Theory, ICDT'90. The conferences in this series are held biannually in beautiful European cities, Rome in 1986 and Bruges in 1988 with proceedings published as volumes 234 and 326 in the same series. ICDT'90 was organized in Paris by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique. The conference features 2 invited presentations and 31 papers selected from 129 submissions. The papers describe original ideas and new results on the foundations of databases, knowledge bases, object-oriented databases, relational theory, transaction management, data structures and deductive databases. The volume offers a good overview of the state of the art and the current trends in database theory. It should be a valuable source of information for researchers interested in the field.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the Eleventh International Conference on the Entity-Relationship Approach held in Karlsruhe, Germany, October 7-9, 1992. It contains the full versions of all the 22 accepted papers selected from in total 64 submissions; in addition, the two invited talks by Scheer and by Tsichritzis and others are represented asfull papers and the two other invited speakers contribute extended abstracts. All the contributions describe original research related to theoretical or practical aspects of the Entity-Relationship Approach,reflecting the trend of recent years in a wide range of database research activities. In particular, the topics database design aspects, object-orientation, integrity constraints, query languages, knowledge-based techniques, and development of new applications are addressed.

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere. The database c- munity is interested in XML because it can be used to represent a variety of data f- mats originating in different kinds of data repositories while providing structure and the possibility to add type information. The theme of this symposium is the combination of database and XML te- nologies. Today, we see growing interest in using these technologies together for many Web-based and database-centric applications. XML is being used to publish data from database systems on the Web by providing input to content generators for Web pages, and database systems are increasingly being used to store and query XML data, often by handling queries issued over the Internet. As database systems incre- ingly start talking to each other over the Web, there is a fast-growing interest in using XML as the standard exchange format for distributed query processing. As a result, many relational database systems export data as XML documents, import data from XML documents, provide query and update capabilities for XML data. In addition, so-called native XML database and integration systems are appearing on the database market, and it’s claimed that they are especially tailored to store, maintain and easily access XML documents.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th East European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2003, held in Dresden, Germany in September 2003. The 29 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 86 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on compositional development, advanced query processing, transactions, retrieval from the Web, indexing techniques, active databases and workflows, complex value storage, data mining, formal query semantics, spatial aspects of information systems, XML processing, multimedia data management, information integration, and query containment.

The interaction of database and AI technologies is crucial to such applications as data mining, active databases, and knowledge-based expert systems. This volume collects the primary readings on the interactions, actual and potential, between these two fields. The editors have chosen articles to balance significant early research and the best and most comprehensive articles from the 1980s. An in-depth introduction discusses basic research motivations, giving a survey of the history, concepts, and terminology of the interaction. Major themes, approaches and results, open issues and future directions are all discussed, including the results of a major survey conducted by the editors of current work in industry and research labs. Thirteen sections follow, each with a short introduction. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to the proccedings of the 23rd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2004). This conference provided an international forum for technical discussion on conceptual modeling of information systems among researchers, developers and users. This was the third time that this conference was held in Asia; the?rst time was in Singapore in 1998 and the second time was in Yokohama, Japan in 2001. China is the third largest nation with the largest population in the world. Shanghai, the largest city in China and a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world, is therefore a most appropriate location to host this conference. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the two keynote talks by Prof. Hector Garcia-Molina and Prof. Gerhard Weikum, and an invited talk by Dr. Xiao Ji. This volume also contains industrial papers and demo/poster papers. An additional volume contains papers from 6 workshops.
