Brunello Terreni (1953-2000) was a researcher and teacher with vision and dedication. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Brunello Terreni. This book contains articles on maximal regulatory problems, interpolation spaces, multiplicative perturbations of generators, linear and nonlinear evolution equations, integrodifferential equations, dual semigroups, positive semigroups, applications to control theory, and boundary value problems.

Nonlinear evolution equations arise in many fields of sciences including physics, mechanics, and material science. This book introduces some important methods for dealing with these equations and explains clearly and concisely a wide range of relevant theories and techniques. These include the semigroup method, the compactness and monotone operator methods, the monotone iterative method and invariant regions, the global existence and uniqueness theory for small initial data, and the asymptotic behavior of solutions and global attractors. Many of the results are published in book form for the first time. Bibliographic comments in each chapter provide the reader with references and further reading materials to enable further research and study.

In recent years there appeared a large number of papers as well as chapters in more general monographs devoted to evolution equations containing small (or large) parameters. In this book it is intended to gather the existing results as well as to introduce new ones on the field of initial value problems for singularly perturbed evolution equations of the resonance type. Such equations are of great interest in the applied sciences, particularly in the kinetic theory which is chosen as the main field of application for the asymptotic theory developed in the monograph.

Philippe Bénilan was a most original and charismatic mathematician who had a deep and decisive impact on the theory of Nonlinear Evolution Equations.
