This book discusses recent developments in semigroup theory and its applications in areas such as operator algebras, operator approximations and category theory. All contributing authors are eminent researchers in their respective fields, from across the world. Their papers, presented at the 2014 International Conference on Semigroups, Algebras and Operator Theory in Cochin, India, focus on recent developments in semigroup theory and operator algebras. They highlight current research activities on the structure theory of semigroups as well as the role of semigroup theoretic approaches to other areas such as rings and algebras. The deliberations and discussions at the conference point to future research directions in these areas. This book presents 16 unpublished, high-quality and peer-reviewed research papers on areas such as structure theory of semigroups, decidability vs. undecidability of word problems, regular von Neumann algebras, operator theory and operator approximations. Interested researchers will find several avenues for exploring the connections between semigroup theory and the theory of operator algebras.

This volume collects contributions from participants in the IWOTA conference held virtually at Lancaster, UK, originally scheduled in 2020 but postponed to August 2021. It includes both survey articles and original research papers covering some of the main themes of the meeting.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the Conference on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Gothenburg, Sweden, April 26-29, 2011. The conference was held in honour of Professor Victor Shulman on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The papers included in the volume cover a large variety of topics, among them the theory of operator ideals, linear preservers, C*-algebras, invariant subspaces, non-commutative harmonic analysis, and quantum groups, and reflect recent developments in these areas. The book consists of both original research papers and high quality survey articles, all of which were carefully refereed. ​

This book contains papers presented at the NSF/CBMS Regional Conference on Coordinates in Operator Algebras, held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in May 1990. During the conference, in addition to a series of ten lectures by Paul S Muhly (which will be published in a CBMS Regional Conference Series volume), there were twenty-eight lectures delivered by conference participants on a broad range of topics of current interest in operator algebras and operator theory. This volume contains slightly expanded versions of most of those lectures. Participants were encouraged to bring open problems to the conference, and, as a result, there are over one hundred problems and questions scattered throughout this volume. Readers will appreciate this book for the overview it provides of current topics and methods of operator algebras and operator theory.

This volume contains the proceedings of the eighteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA), hosted by the Unit for Business Mathematics and Informatics of North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa from July 3 to 6, 2007. The conference (as well as these proceedings) was dedicated to Professors Joseph A. Ball and Marinus M. Kaashoek on the occasion of their 60th and 70th birthdays, respectively. This conference had a particular focus on Von Neumann algebras at the interface of operator theory with functional analysis and on applications of operator theory to differential equations.

The Cuntz semigroup of a -algebra is an important invariant in the structure and classification theory of -algebras. It captures more information than -theory but is often more delicate to handle. The authors systematically study the lattice and category theoretic aspects of Cuntz semigroups. Given a -algebra , its (concrete) Cuntz semigroup is an object in the category of (abstract) Cuntz semigroups, as introduced by Coward, Elliott and Ivanescu. To clarify the distinction between concrete and abstract Cuntz semigroups, the authors call the latter -semigroups. The authors establish the existence of tensor products in the category and study the basic properties of this construction. They show that is a symmetric, monoidal category and relate with for certain classes of -algebras. As a main tool for their approach the authors introduce the category of pre-completed Cuntz semigroups. They show that is a full, reflective subcategory of . One can then easily deduce properties of from respective properties of , for example the existence of tensor products and inductive limits. The advantage is that constructions in are much easier since the objects are purely algebraic.

This book is composed of three survey lecture courses and some twenty invited research papers presented to WOAT 2006 - the International Summer School and Workshop on Operator Algebras, Operator Theory and Applications, held at Lisbon in September 2006. The volume reflects recent developments in the area of operator algebras and their interaction with research fields in complex analysis and operator theory. The book is aimed at postgraduates and researchers in these fields.

The study of operator algebras, which grew out of von Neumann's work in the 1920s and the 1930s on modelling quantum mechanics, has in recent years experienced tremendous growth and vitality. This growth has resulted in significant applications in other areas - both within and outside mathematics. The field was a natural candidate for a 1994-1995 programme year in Operator Algebras and Applications held at The Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences. This book describes the outstanding recent progress in this important and challenging field and presents general background for the scientific context and specifics regarding key difficulties. Quantization is developed in the context of rigorous nonlinear quantum field theory in four dimensions and in connection with symplectic manifold theory and random Schrödinger operators. Nonlinear wave equations are exposed in relation to recent important progress in general relativity, in purely mathematical terms of microlocal analysis, and as represented by progress on the relativistic Boltzmann equation. Most of the developments in this volume appear in book form for the first time. The resulting work is a concise and informative way to explore the field and the spectrum of methods available for its investigation.
