BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Christ For the Papists this week is one of torture; they sing and read and preach exceedingly much concern ing the passion of Christ. But what does it avail them? It is true, they speak of Christ's sufferings but in their heart there is no thought of them, or else they would not prize so highly their own self inflicted penances and their own works. But it is not much better with us, who have the pure Gospel abundantly preached to us; our lives and deeds indicate that we also have disregarded it. The effects of the preaching of the Word are therefore not the same with all, inasmuch as not all are dis posed to receive it. If we were to relate to the people some idle tales and stories, they would re member them at once; whereas now, thousands upon thousands hear repeatedly the preaching of the Gospel without retaining it, and without profiting by its instructions. They come back from church just as they went there. They hear the Word. But disregard it as something common and unimportant. BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ We can never at all realize or even have any idea of the meaning of the great, the stupendous fact which the Church today commemorates, unless we know and keep before us, Who it is that suffers on the cross. Hence I begin our instruction with asking - Who is it that hangs, agonizing and suffering, on the hill of Calvary? It is Jesus Christ, at once God and Man, the Eternal Word and Wisdom Of the Godhead, the very Figure of His substance and the Splendor of His glory; He before Whom the worlds tremble and the Angels are not pure. It is He Who from the beginning was in the Father; in Whom and by Whom and through Whom all things have been made; the Second adorable Person of the Blessed Trinity, and no less. Let this truth sink deep into your souls; for without it Calvary has no meaning. If Christ were but a mere man, His Sacrifice would not be that which it claims to be, and which it is our hope and security and salvation that it is. Lancelot Andrewes Selected Sermons And Lectures

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the first annotated critical edition of works of Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626), a writer recognized by literary critics, historians, and theologians as one of the most important figures in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Peter McCullough, a leading expert on religious writing in the early modern period, presents fourteen complete sermons and lectures preached by Andrewes across the whole range of his adult career, from Cambridge in the 1580s to the court of James I and VI in the 1620s. Through a radical reassessment of Andrewes's life, influence, and surviving texts, the editor presents Andrewes as his contemporaries saw, heard, and read him, and as scholars are increasingly recognizing him: one of the most subtle, yet radical critics of mainstream Elizabethan Protestantism, and a literary artist of the highest order. The centuries-old influence of William Laud's authorized edition of Andrewes (1629) is here complicated and contextualized by the full use for the first time of the whole range of Andrewes's works printed before and after his lifetime, as well as manuscript sources. The edition also showcases the aesthetic brilliance of Andrewes's remarkable prose, and suggests new ways for scholars to carry forward the modern literary appreciation of Andrewes famously begun by T. S. Eliot. A full introductory essay sets study of Andrewes on a new footing by placing his works in the context of his life and career, surveying the history of responses to his writings, and summarizing the history of the transmission of his texts. The texts here are edited to high modern critical standards. The exhaustive commentary sets each selection in its historical context, documents Andrewes's myriad sources, glosses important and unfamiliar words and allusions, and translates his frequent quotations from the ancient Biblical languages.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Albert Butzer believes that "sermons should speak to the real and immediate lives of listeners and be grounded in the everyday events of their lives." This collection of sermons for Lent and Easter based on gospel texts definitely achieves that goal; Butzer's messages consistently and creatively deliver a ringing proclamation of the good news. They are outstanding examples of the homiletical art that bring together several elements of the classic sermon: biblical text, theological tradition, life of the world, life and experience of a particular congregation, and faith and experience of the preacher. This is a delightful collection of compassionate, no-nonsense sermons. They may be read as devotional literature by lay people or as models for thoughtful, literate preaching by clergy. Above all, this book is well-honed for Lenten reflection by any Christian group looking for provocative conversation. Joseph M. Webb Associate Professor of Homiletics Claremont School of Theology Butzer's sermons are precisely what thinking preachers want in a lectionary resource -- scholarship with a soul. To the testimonies of the four Evangelists, he engages professors and poets alike: Douglas John Hall, Raymond Brown, Annie Dillard, and Frederick Buechner, to name a few. Butzer's pastoral heart also ensures that one other vital group is engaged: his listeners. Mike Graves Associate Professor of Homiletics and Worship Central Baptist Theological Seminary These sermons represent Butzer's weekly offering of his faith, experience, hope, and passion to his people. As such, they are an act of devotion. And they are an example of preaching at its most basic and most classic. (from the Preface) John M. Buchanan Pastor, Fourth Presbyterian Church Chicago, Illinois Albert G. Butzer III has been pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia (a suburb of Washington DC) since 1994. A graduate of Tufts University and Princeton Theological Seminary, Butzer previously served congregations in Illinois and New Jersey. He was the 1992 Moderator of the Chicago Presbytery and was a commissioner to his denomination's General Assembly in 1992 and 1999. Butzer's sermons, essays, and book reviews have appeared in The Christian Ministry, Pulpit Digest, Presbyterian Outlook, and The Journal Of Stewardship. Two of his sermons have received awards in national sermon competitions.
