Current IT developments like component-based development and Web services have emerged as effective ways of building complex enterprise-scale information systems and providing enterprise application integration. To aid this process, platforms such as .NET and WebSphere have become standards in web-based systems development. However, there are still a lot of issues that need to be addressed before service-oriented software engineering (SOSE) becomes a prominent and widely accepted paradigm for enterprise information systems development and integration. This book provides a comprehensive view of SOSE through a number of different perspectives. Some of those perspectives include: service-based concepts, modeling and documentation, service discovery and composition, service-oriented architecture, model-driven development of service-oriented applications, service security and service-orientation in mobile settings. The book provides readers with an in-depth knowledge of the main challenges and practices in the exciting, new world of service-oriented software engineering. Addressing both technical and organizational aspects of this new field, it offers a balance making it valuable to a variety of readers, including IT architects, developers, managers, and analysts.

This volume contains the technical papers presented in the workshops, which took place at the 7th European Conference on Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing, ESOCC 2018, held in Como, Italy, in September 2018:Joint Cloudways and OptiMoCS Workshop; 14th International Workshop on Engineering Service-Oriented Applications and Cloud Services. Additionally the papers from ESOCC 2018 PhD Symposium and ESOCC 2018 EU Projects Track were included in the volume. The 22 full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 34 submissions. The papers focus on specific topics in service-oriented and cloud computing domains such as limits and/or advantages of existing cloud solutions, future internet technologies, efficient and adaptive deployment and management of service-based applications across multiple clouds, novel cloud service migration practices and solutions, digitization of enterprises in the cloud computing era, federated cloud networking services.

In this book, internationally recognized experts in philosophy of science, computer science, and modeling and simulation are contributing to the discussion on how ontology, epistemology, and teleology will contribute to enable the next generation of intelligent modeling and simulation applications. It is well understood that a simulation can provide the technical means to display the behavior of a system over time, including following observed trends to predict future possible states, but how reliable and trustworthy are such predictions? The questions about what we can know (ontology), how we gain new knowledge (epistemology), and what we do with this knowledge (teleology) are therefore illuminated from these very different perspectives, as each experts uses a different facet to look at these challenges. The result of bringing these perspectives into one book is a challenging compendium that gives room for a spectrum of challenges: from general philosophy questions, such as can we use modeling and simulation and other computational means at all to discover new knowledge, down to computational methods to improve semantic interoperability between systems or methods addressing how to apply the recent insights of service oriented approaches to support distributed artificial intelligence. As such, this book has been compiled as an entry point to new domains for students, scholars, and practitioners and to raise the curiosity in them to learn more to fully address the topics of ontology, epistemology, and teleology from philosophical, computational, and conceptual viewpoints.

The theme “Build and Conquer” chosen for this year’s conference fully represents what we (the organizers) want to put across to the software community: software development is an engineering discipline, and not an artistic expression. Once we are ready to “build” our software systems using pieces previously builtin (similar to any other technology manufacturer), we will be able to “conquer” the software engineering process. If we take a look at other engineering disciplines such as car manufacturing, house appliances or aeronautics, we see that the final products are built through the integration of multiprovider commercial components. These components are successfully integrated and constitute an important part of the final product. Most software-related organizations still build software from scratch, omitting thousands of ready-built commercially available software components that could be used very effectively during the development phase. This year ICCBSS moves to Europe for the first time since the first conference took place in Orlando, FL, USA in 2002. The conference scope has enlarged over the years to include the Open Source community and Web Services technologies. The reason for this is that I believe both are considered components-off-the-shelf, so many of the characteristics of COTS are also applied to Open Source and Web Services. Due to this, we will enjoy the presence of keynote speakers and researchers presenting on these two topics for the first time.
