Shaping The Corporate Landscape

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Currently, there exists a distrust of corporate activity in the continuing aftermath of the financial crisis and with increasing recognition of the threats of climate change and global, as well as national, inequalities. Despite efforts in the arena of corporate governance to address these, we are still beset with corporate scandals and witness companies facing large fines for their environmental and cost-cutting misdemeanours. Recognising that the usual responses to dealing with these corporate problems are not effective, this book asks whether the traditional form of the joint stock corporation itself lies at the heart of these problems. What are the features of the corporate form and how does its current regulation underscore these problems? Identifying such features provides a basis for the discussion to develop towards suggesting more progressive regulatory developments around the corporate form. More fundamentally, this book investigates a diverse range of corporate governance models that are emerging as alternatives to the shareholder corporation, including employee-owned, cooperative and social enterprises. The contributors are leading scholars from various backgrounds including law, management and organisation studies, finance and accounting, as well as experienced professionals and policy makers with expertise in social and cooperative business models and the role of employees in the corporation.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The central theme of this book is that the ability to read market expectations and anticipate revisions of those expectations is the springboard for earning superior long-term returns. Stock prices express the collective expectations of investors, and changes in those expectations determine investment success. #2 Expectations investing is a practical application of corporate finance principles that many companies have used for decades. It incorporates the concepts of value creation and competitive strategy analysis. #3 The disappointing performance of professionally managed funds is not an indictment of active management, but rather reflects the suboptimal strategies used by many active professionals. #4 Expectations investing draws from finance theory to pinpoint the market's expectations. It then taps appropriate competitive strategy frameworks to help investors anticipate revisions in expectations.

Reframing The Leadership Landscape

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In an uncertain and complex world leaders should not merely respond to the speed of change but attempt to anticipate it. Sometimes it is unexpected, sometimes the signs are there but the dots are not joined together. The NEW normal must be navigated, negotiated, networked and a narrative built around it. Leaders need to adapt to a changing ecosystem in which the biggest challenges cross the boundaries of the public, private and non-profit sectors, requiring much closer collaboration. Aggressive individualism is no longer a sustainable basis for companies needing to deliver social and economic value, now, enterprises must move beyond narrow self-interest and short-termism to balance stakeholder expectations. In Reframing the Leadership Landscape, Dr Roger Hayes and Dr Reginald Watts argue that the interconnected and interdependent world requires leaders to adopt a more holistic and inclusive approach. Despite global business education advances, business mostly fails to make cross-disciplinary connections or interpret weak signals and is ill-prepared for changes in cultural and technical demands. The tool kit is here, ready to be unpacked. The only question is whether aspirant leaders are sensitive enough to read the signals and develop the skills needed to create an essential collaborative paradigm, which they must do if they wish to regain trust, fill the leadership void and help reshape a sustainable future.
