BOOK EXCERPT:
Fuzzy knowledge and fuzzy systems affect our lives today as systems enter the world of commerce. Fuzzy systems are incorporated in domestic appliances (washing machine, air conditioning, microwave, telephone) and in transport systems (a pilotless helicopter has recently completed a test flight). Future applications are expected to have dramatic implications for the demand for labor, among other things. It was with such thoughts in mind that this first international survey of future applications of fuzzy logic has been undertaken. The results are likely to be predictive for a decade beyond the millenium. The predictive element is combined with a bibliography which serves as an historical anchor as well as being both extensive and extremely useful. Analysis and Evaluation of Fuzzy Systems is thus a milestone in the development of fuzzy logic and applications of three representative subsystems: Fuzzy Control, Fuzzy Pattern Recognition and Fuzzy Communications.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Parasites have evolved independently in numerous animal lineages, and they now make up a considerable proportion of the biodiversity of life. Not only do they impact humans and other animals in fundamental ways, but in recent years they have become a powerful model system for the study of ecology and evolution, with practical applications in disease prevention. Here, in a thoroughly revised and updated edition of his influential earlier work, Robert Poulin provides an evolutionary ecologist's view of the biology of parasites. He sets forth a comprehensive synthesis of parasite evolutionary ecology, integrating information across scales from the features of individual parasites to the dynamics of parasite populations and the structuring of parasite communities. Evolutionary Ecology of Parasites presents an evolutionary framework for the study of parasite biology, combining theory with empirical examples for a broader understanding of why parasites are as they are and do what they do. An up-to-date synthesis of the field, the book is an ideal teaching tool for advanced courses on the subject. Pointing toward promising directions and setting a research agenda, it will also be an invaluable reference for researchers who seek to extend our knowledge of parasite ecology and evolution.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book offers practical solutions to achieving sustainable urbandesign and development, and helps designers communicate thesesolutions effectively to planners, developers and policy makers. Addressing sustainability issues in relation to the design andplanning of the urban environment is a complex, multi-disciplinaryissue and solutions never arrive from a single perspective. Theauthors use design as a facilitating factor to consider when and bywhom decisions that contribute to sustainability are made, andthrough three major city-centre case studies - London, Manchesterand Sheffield – they consider social, environmental andeconomic factors and examine their relationship to thedecision-making process. Designing Sustainable Cities begins by identifying thekey processes and lead decision-makers. The following chaptersdevelop an understanding of the dimensions of sustainability, presenting the tools by which the dimensions can be analysed. Laterchapters illustrate the trade-offs and the relationships betweenthe dimensions of sustainability - with case study examples - aswell as the use of IT in making design decisions. Finally, the bookmakes recommendations for future approaches to the design, development and on-going management of urban environments. Designing Sustainable Cities covers: latest research data on the urban environment and theinteraction between social, economic and environmental issues methods of understanding the context in which urban designtakes place guidance on the codes of practice process maps to help understand the context, make trade-offsand develop design solutions that allow for change methods for testing the consequences of design proposals andmonitoring outcomes.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume consists of three papers, the first paper by T Ray aims to create an instantiation of evolution by natural selection in the computational medium. This creates a conceptual problem that requires considerable art to solve. The second paper by K-I Naka and V Bhanot discusses an interesting application of white noise analysis to the retinal physiology. It deals with identification of the retina mathematically, and one can see profound results that can be discovered only by using white noise analysis. The last paper by T Hida illustrates the use of white noise analysis for biologists. Readers will see the types of topics to which white noise analysis can be applied and how to apply the theory to actual phenomena.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The fundamental contributions made by the late Victor Lomonosov in several areas of analysis are revisited in this book, in particular, by presenting new results and future directions from world-recognized specialists in the field. The invariant subspace problem, Burnside's theorem, and the Bishop-Phelps theorem are discussed in detail. This volume is an essential reference to both researchers and graduate students in mathematical analysis.
