Silica Based Materials For Advanced Chemical Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the first book to address the hot topic of functional silica gels and their applications. Originally used mainly in chromatography, specialized silica gels have evolved into crucially important functional nanomaterials suitable for use in, amongst other things, chemical synthesis, analysis, purification, surface protection and drug release. It is estimated that the world's current 1 billion dollar market for sol-gels (mostly silica-based) will grow by more than 5% per year from 2006 to 2011. Actually, as many revolutionary products are now reaching the market, it will increase much faster. Commercial applications include glasses, paints, catalysts and fragrances. Medical uses include the delivery of vitamins, hormones and acne treatments and the synthesis of the powerful anticancer drug, taxol. Sol-gel technology also forms the basis of the MetaChip, thanks to which potential new drugs can be identified rapidly and simultaneously. With content relevant to both scientific and commercial viewpoints, the book will interest researchers and undergraduates as well as managers and consultants in the chemical industry. Those from an industrial background will gain a clear picture of what this technology is all about and how it can be used to solve their specific problems. All readers will benefit from the clear, concise style and consistent treatment of topics. The book demonstrates how chemists synthesize, from the bottom-up, tailor-made (nano)materials of immense practical importance spanning the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, biology and medicine. It also shows how the versatility of silica gels results from their physical and chemical properties. An updated outlook on new commercial products, and the companies which make them, greatly adds relevance and practical value to the text.

Densification Impact On Raw Chemically And Thermally Pretreated Biomass Physical Properties And Biofuels Production

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

First-generation ethanol plants did not have many operational challenges as the feedstocks (e.g., corn) used for fuel production are dense, stable, storable, and shippable commodity-type products with fewer conversion challenges. These feedstock properties led the first-generation large-scale biorefineries to grow exponentially. In the second-generation biofuels, the feedstocks used are agricultural and forest residues, dedicated energy crops, industrial wastes, and municipal solid waste. When the industry tested these feedstocks for biofuel production, they faced flowability, storage, transportation, and conversion issues. One way to overcome some of the feeding, handling, transportation, and variable moisture challenges is to densify the biomass. Pellet mills and briquette presses are commonly used to produce densified products. The densified products have uniform size, shape, higher bulk density, and better downstream conversion performance. Also, the densified products are aerobically stable and can be stored for longer durations without any loss in quality. This book's focus is on understanding how the densification process variables, biomass types and their blends, mechanical preprocessing, and thermal and chemical pretreatment methods impact the quality of the densified products produced for biofuel production. Finally, the book also explores the conversion performance of densified biomass for biofuel production.

Separations Of Water Pollutants With Nanotechnology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Separations of Water Pollutants with Nanotechnology, the latest volume in the Separation Science and Technology series, offers new solutions for remediating water pollution utilizing nanomaterials with separation methods. Current water purification methods are unsuitable, inconvenient or expensive, so there is a need for new and better processes and techniques. Nanomaterials can purify water by removing pollutants such as heavy metals, pathogens, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals of emerging concern. These can effectively replace membrane-based methods if the right expertise is developed—this book helps separation scientists do just that. Existing water treatment problems can be solved by applying a nanotechnology-based processes: antimicrobial nanotechnology, zero-valent iron nanoparticles, nanoadsorbents, nano-enhanced membranes, nanometal oxides, and nano photocatalysts. The current literature places emphasis on materials chemistry rather than the separation methods used for water purification. This new volume presents a collection of chapters that deal with remediation based on separation chemistry. Written by leaders in their respective fields from around the world and edited by Satinder Ahuja, a leading expert on water quality improvement Covers the environmental impact of anthropogenic nanoparticles and plant derived bionanomaterials, which are not contained in other books related to nanomaterials for water purification Illustrates key information visually wherever possible throughout the book, e.g. process diagrams in the nanomaterial synthesis and nanomembrane fabrication chapters, electron microscope images, and more
