Trinity is the story about Jason Skarr, lead singer for the band Trinity. As a high school kid, he was a musical genius. He learned how to play and mastered all the musical instruments in his high school band. He also sang with his mother in the church choir. He soon started writing gospel and inspirational songs for the church. His dad is a deacon in their church in St. Louis. Jason Skarr is the stage name for Franklin Jay Scarborough. His best friend, Marty, convinces Franklin to change his name to Jason Skarr in order to keep his parents from finding out he is a singer in a band. Franklins father wants him to be a deacon in the church and teach music in high school or in a college. Franklin wears his mothers rosary around his neck all the time. Before finishing school, both friends form the band with help from other kids in the school band, and the bands backup singers are discovered in a karaoke bar. They are hoping to be discovered by somebody and start a singing career.

Excerpt from Evolution and the Doctrine of the Trinity It is occasionally possible to disarm a critic by anticipating his criticisms. There is a frank ingenuousness about the proceeding that is somewhat disconcerting. That fact, however, is not my main reason for using this Preface to draw attention to two characteristics of the pages that follow, which may very likely, and perhaps justly, be selected for adverse comment. Anyone who tries to think honestly can only be grateful when his theories are subjected to criticism. There comes a stage when he can no longer act as his own critic. Then he must get the help he needs from others. In those conditions he is justly entitled, as it seems to me, to explain why he has set out his theories in the particular form in which they are submitted to the critics; and it is only this liberty I claim. There is, unquestionably, full room at present for a restatement of the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity in terms that are consonant with modem thought. Indeed, it is not too much to say that there is urgent need of such a restatement. A vague pantheism is the characteristic product of the religious speculation of to-day, and Christian doctrine, if not Christian ethics, is in danger of losing its hold on the minds of the most able among the younger men and women of England. Pantheism, with its emphasis on ultimate Unity, is not impressed by the tritheistic expression of Christian belief which passes popularly for Trinitarian doctrine. The triune God of grace, James B. Torrance tirelessly insisted, is the true agent to transform worship, mission, and society. Unfortunately, the church often lapses into moralism and legalism, or exhortations and condemnations, rather than witnessing to the sole-sufficient grace of God in Christ. When we neglect the Trinity, a de facto unitarianism throws the church back onto its own existence and resources. In Christ, however, the church participates through the Spirit in union with Christ's communion with the Father. By so doing, it also participates in Christ's mission to the world. The essays of this volume articulate and extend Torrance's evangelical theology, which draws attention away from ourselves and toward the triune God who is for us and for the world.

This book, the first serious analysis of the doctrine of the Trinity for many years, presents a defense against the conservative treatment of the Trinity as an impenetrable mystery, and against the radical position that the doctrine is incoherent and therefore unacceptable. Brown favors the founding of a new discipline of philosophical theology (or the widening of the horizons of the philosophy of religion) to apply more widely the type of penetration of theology by philosophy that he exemplifies in his treatment of the Trinity. He argues for belief in an interventionist God (theism rather than deism), and contends that biblical criticism and historical research do not imply the abandonment of Christian belief, since the historical original should not be equated with theological truth. Although historical difficulties must prevent any literal acceptance of the Gospel accounts in toto, the true Christ can be disentangled from the historical Jesus by philosophical method. Wide-ranging in scope, rigorous and candid in argument, Brown's work will prove of interest to educated Christian laypersons and others beyond the boundaries of professional theology and philosophy of religion. Perhaps most provocative is Brown's assertion that the Resurrection must be accepted as a literally true visionary experience, and that anyone who accepts it must be prepared to take seriously other visionary experiences, for example, visions of the Virgin Mary, even if he rejects them in the end. It is certainly an astonishing truth that God should be so interested in a being of such vastly inferior powers as man, says the author. But that clearly must be the implication of the doctrine of the Trinity . . . To have reached this conclusion by means of philosophical argument is to have taken a major step toward the complete penetration of theology by philosophy that Brown calls for.

Paul s ways of speaking about God, Jesus, and the Spirit are intricately intertwined: talking about any one of the three, for Paul, implies reference to all of them together. However, much current Pauline scholarship discusses Paul s God-, Christ-, and Spirit-language without reference to trinitarian theology.
