Over the last decade, Method Engineering, defined as the engineering discipline to design, construct and adapt methods, including supportive tools, has emerged as the research and application area for using methods for systems development. This book contains the papers from the IFIP Working Group 8.1 conference on Situational Method Engineering.

The 2009 Symposium on Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE 2009) was the 12thin a series ofsuccessful eventsthat havegrowninto the main forum for industrial and academic experts to discuss component technology. Component-based software engineering (CBSE) has emerged as the under- ing technology for the assembly of ?exible software systems. In essence, CBSE is about composing computational building blocks to construct larger building blocks that ful?ll client needs. Most software engineers are involved in some form of component-based development. Nonetheless, the implications of CBSE adoption are wide-reaching and its challenges grow in tandem with its uptake, continuing to inspire our scienti?c speculation. Component-based development necessarily involves elements of software - chitecture, modular software design, software veri?cation, testing, con?guration and deployment. This year’s submissions represent a cross-section of CBSE - search that touches upon all these aspects. The theoretical foundations of c- ponent speci?cation, composition, analysis, and veri?cation continue to pose research challenges. What exactly constitutes an adequate semantics for c- munication and composition so that bigger things can be built from smaller things? How can formal approaches facilitate predictable assembly through b- ter analysis? We have grouped the proceedings into two sub-themes that deal with these issues: component models and communication and composition. At the same time, the world is changing.

While previously available methodologies for software – like those published in the early days of object technology – claimed to be appropriate for every conceivable project, situational method engineering (SME) acknowledges that most projects typically have individual characteristics and situations. Thus, finding the most effective methodology for a particular project needs specific tailoring to that situation. Such a tailored software development methodology needs to take into account all the bits and pieces needed for an organization to develop software, including the software process, the input and output work products, the people involved, the languages used to describe requirements, design, code, and eventually also measures of success or failure. The authors have structured the book into three parts. Part I deals with all the basic concepts, terminology and overall ideas underpinning situational method engineering. As a summary of this part, they present a formal meta-model that enables readers to create their own quality methods and supporting tools. In Part II, they explain how to implement SME in practice, i.e., how to find method components and put them together and how to evaluate the resulting method. For illustration, they also include several industry case studies of customized or constructed processes, highlighting the impact that high-quality engineered methods can have on the success of an industrial software development. Finally, Part III summarizes some of the more recent and forward-looking ideas. This book presents the first summary of the state of the art for SME. For academics, it provides a comprehensive conceptual framework and discusses new research areas. For lecturers, thanks to its step-by-step explanations from basics to the customization and quality assessment of constructed methods, it serves as a solid basis for comprehensive courses on the topic. For industry methodologists, it offers a reference guide on features and technologies to consider when developing in-house software development methods or customising and adopting off-the-shelf ones.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference on Method Engineering, ME 2011, held in Paris, France, in April 2011. The 13 revised full papers and 6 short papers presented together with the abstracts of two keynote talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 30 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on situated method engineering, method engineering foundations, customized methods, tools for method engineering, new trends to build methods, and method engineering services.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE 2010, held im Hammamet, Tunisia, in June 2010. The 39 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 299 submissions. The topics covered are business process modeling, information systems quality, service modelling, security management, matching and mining, case studies and experiences, conceptual modelling, adaptation, requirements, and process analysis. In addition this volume contains two keynote papers and the abstract of a panel discussion.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Global Perspectives on Design Science Research, DERIST 2010, held in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in June 2010. The 35 revised full papers presented together with 10 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 80 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on organising design research, reflecting design science research, design research techniques, design and context, design and organisation, design and information, design research exemplars, design and behaviour, designing collaboration, as well as design and requirements engineering.

This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Business Process Modeling, Development and Support (BPMDS 2014) and the 19th International Conference on Exploring Modeling Methods for Systems Analysis and Design (EMMSAD 2014), held together with the 26th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE 2014) in Thessaloniki, Greece, in June 2014. The 20 full papers accepted for BPMDS were selected from 48 submissions and cover a wide spectrum of issues related to business process development, modeling, and support. They are grouped into topical sections on business process modeling as a human-driven process, representing the human perspective of business processes, supporting humans in business processes, variability-enabling process models, various models for various process perspectives, and BPMDS in practice. The ten full and three short papers accepted for EMMSAD were chosen from 27 submissions and focus on exploring, evaluating, and enhancing modeling methods and methodologies for the analysis and design of information systems, enterprises, and business processes. They are grouped into sections on conceptual modeling, requirements modeling, business process modeling, goal and language action modeling, enterprise and business modeling, and new approaches.

This book constitutes the proceedings of two events held at the CAiSE conference and relating to the areas of enterprise, business process and information systems modeling: The 20th International Conference on Business Process Modeling, Development and Support, BPMDS 2019, and the 24th International Conference on Evaluation and Modeling Methods for Systems Analysis and Development, EMMSAD 2019. The conferences took place in Rome, Italy, in June 2019.
