BOOK EXCERPT:
The return of the congress to North America after 20 years of absence could not have been in a more ideal location. The beauty of Banff and the many offerings of the Rocky Mountains was the perfect background for a week of interesting and innovative discussions on the past, present and future of geostatistics. The congress was well attended with approximately 200 delegates from 19 countries across six continents. There was a broad spectrum of students and seasoned geostatisticians who shared their knowledge in many areas of study including mining, petroleum, and environmental applications. You will find 119 papers in this two volume set. All papers were presented at the congress and have been peer-reviewed. They are grouped by the different sessions that were held in Banff and are in the order of presentation. These papers provide a permanent record of different theoretical perspectives from the last four years. Not all of these ideas will stand the test of time and practice; however, their originality will endure. The practical applications in these proceedings provide nuggets of wisdom to those struggling to apply geostatistics in the best possible way. Students and practitioners will be digging through these papers for many years to come. Oy Leuangthong Clayton V. Deutsch ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We would like to thank the industry sponsors who contributed generously to the overall success and quality of the congress: De Beers Canada Earth Decision Sciences Maptek Chile Ltda. Mira Geoscience Nexen Inc. Petro-Canada Placer Dome Inc.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book provides expository derivations for moments of a family of pseudo distributions, which is an extended family of distributions including the pseudo normal (PN) distributions recently proposed by the author. The PN includes the skew normal (SN) derived by A. Azzalini and the closed skew normal (CSN) obtained by A. Domínguez-Molina, G. González-Farías, and A. K. Gupta as special cases. It is known that the CSN includes the SN and other various distributions as special cases, which shows that the PN has a wider variety of distributions. The SN and CSN have symmetric and skewed asymmetric distributions. However, symmetric distributions are restricted to normal ones. On the other hand, symmetric distributions in the PN can be non-normal as well as normal. In this book, for the non-normal symmetric distributions, the term “kurtic normal (KN)” is used, where the coined word “kurtic” indicates “mesokurtic, leptokurtic, or platykurtic” used in statistics. The variety of the PN was made possible using stripe (tigerish) and sectional truncation in univariate and multivariate distributions, respectively. The proofs of the moments and associated results are not omitted and are often given in more than one method with their didactic explanations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book consists of eighteen articles in the area of `Combinatorial Matrix Theory' and `Generalized Inverses of Matrices'. Original research and expository articles presented in this publication are written by leading Mathematicians and Statisticians working in these areas. The articles contained herein are on the following general topics: `matrices in graph theory', `generalized inverses of matrices', `matrix methods in statistics' and `magic squares'. In the area of matrices and graphs, speci_c topics addressed in this volume include energy of graphs, q-analog, immanants of matrices and graph realization of product of adjacency matrices. Topics in the book from `Matrix Methods in Statistics' are, for example, the analysis of BLUE via eigenvalues of covariance matrix, copulas, error orthogonal model, and orthogonal projectors in the linear regression models. Moore-Penrose inverse of perturbed operators, reverse order law in the case of inde_nite inner product space, approximation numbers, condition numbers, idempotent matrices, semiring of nonnegative matrices, regular matrices over incline and partial order of matrices are the topics addressed under the area of theory of generalized inverses. In addition to the above traditional topics and a report on CMTGIM 2012 as an appendix, we have an article on old magic squares from India.
