Social exclusion, the polarisation of the types of chances life offers to different groups of young people, is increasing and is concentrated in some regions and neighbourhoods. Social class, race and gender can contribute to this phenomenon, as can other inequalities such as disability. Social inclusion is therefore one of the central goals of European policies towards young people, especially in relation to employment, lifelong learning and vocational guidance. This publication contains an edited collection of articles from a research seminar held in Budapest in October/November 2005 and organised within the framework of the Partnership on Youth between the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

Social inclusion and participation have become policy mantras in the UK and Europe. As these concepts are being translated into policies and practice, it is a critical time to examine their interpretation, implementation and impacts. This book asks how far and in what way social inclusion policies are meeting the needs of children and young people.

Youth Policy and Social Inclusion takes a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to identify and analyze the factors which promote or discourage social inclusion of young people in society today.

This handbook is part of a series of thematic publications written by experienced youth workers for use in training and study sessions, produced under the Partnership Agreement on European Youth Worker Training run by the Council of Europe and the European Communities Commission. It focuses on issues of youth inclusion, participation and access, including definitions; barriers to youth participation; non-formal education methods compared to formal education and vocational training; inclusive youth work in practice including building trust and self-esteem; peer education, conflict management and a contractual approach; and practical exercises relating to these issues.

The lives of people with disabilities are complex and various, and there are many situations where technology – particularly assistive technology – already makes a real difference. It is clear that smart phone and tablet computer based solutions continue to enhance the independence of many users, but it is also important that more traditional assistive technologies and services are not forgotten or neglected. This book presents the proceedings of the 14th conference of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe (AAATE 2017) entitled: ‘Harnessing the power of technology to improve lives’, held in Sheffield, UK, in September 2017. This 4-day event about assistive technologies (AT) highlights the association’s interest in innovating not only technology, but also services, and addresses the global challenge of meeting the needs of the increasing number of people who could benefit from assistive technology. The 200+ papers in the book are grouped under 30 subject headings, and include contributions on a wide range of topical subjects, including aging well and dementia; care robotics; eHealth and apps; innovations; universal design; sport; and disordered speech. The breadth of the AAATE conference reflects people’s life needs and so the book is sure to contain something of interest to all those whose work involves the design, development and use of assistive technology, whatever the situation. Today, there is an ample and nuanced understanding of what social exclusion is, the groups of young people affected by it, its long-term impact on young people’s lives and how comprehensive policies can address it. In contrast to when the first edition of this T-Kit was published, in 2003, there is now a common understanding that youth policies and research should provide a strong base for youth work to reach out and support young people with fewer opportunities. This revised T-Kit aims to equip youth work practitioners with broad knowledge of the concepts of social exclusion and inclusion, as well as things to consider when engaging in youth work with young people with fewer opportunities. The practical part of the T-Kit includes a range of projects, approaches and activities to inspire youth workers, covering the five “A”s: 1. Awareness of the realities of social exclusion, 2. Access to empowering and inclusive activities, 3. Action and support mechanisms for inclusion, 4. Accreditation and recognition of experience, progress and achievement and 5. Advancement, laying down supportive stepping stones towards inclusion.

Young people and contradictions of inclusion critically assesses policies addressing young people's transitions from school to employment. This book draws from various fields of knowledge, in an effort to theorise, create new and innovative conceptual platforms and develop further the hybrid idea of discourses around social inclusion and youth (from policy, practice and research perspectives). Youth: Responding to lives – An international handbook attempts to fill the persistent gap in the problematisation and understanding of inclusion, communalism, citizenship – that are intertwined within the complex youth debate. It writhes and wriggles to highlight the interconnections between the encounters, events and endeavors in young people’s lives. The focus of this edited work is also intended to help us understand how young people shape their development, involvement, and visibility as socio-political actors within their communities. It is this speckled experience of youth that remains one of the most electrifying stages in a community’s lifecycle. Contributors to this text have engaged with notions around identity and change, involvement, social behavior, community cohesion, politics and social activism. The chapters offer an array of critical perspectives on social policies and the broad realm of social inclusion/exclusion and how it affects young people. This book essentially analyses equal opportunities and its allied concepts, including inequality, inequity, disadvantage and diversity that have been studied extensively across all disciplines of social sciences and humanities but now need a youth studies ‘application’.
