The Vietnam War has had many long-reaching, traumatic effects, not just on the veterans of the war, but on their children as well. In this book, Weber examines the concept of the war as a social monad, a confusing array of personal stories and public histories that disrupt traditional ways of knowing the social world for the second generation.

The chapters in Memory, History, Nation, written by international scholars, offer a complex awareness of the workings of memory, and the ways in which different or changing histories may be explained. They explore the relation between individual and social memory, between real and imaginary, event and fantasy, history and myth. Contradictory accounts, or memories in direct contradiction to the historical record are not always the sign of a repressive authority attempting to cover something up. The tension between memory as a safeguard against attempts to silence dissenting voices, and memorys own implication in that silencing, runs throughout the book.

Examining the role of Athenian social memory in understanding the political climate in fourth-century Athens

The examination of social memory and heritage tourism has grown considerably over the past few decades as scholars have critically re-examined the relationships between past memories and present actions at international, national, and local scales. Methodological innovation and reflection have accompanied theoretical advances as researchers strive to understand representations, experiences, thoughts, emotions and identities of the various actors involved in the reproduction of social memory and heritage landscapes. This volume of articles explores social memory as a phenomenon by addressing the complex relationship between embodied memory, history, time and space. The studies richly demonstrate how objects and substances may be significant media through which past and present are shared within communities, and also how specific sites, such as bodies, dwellings or geopolitical places, may be so as well. Articles also present reflections on the challenges of gathering field material, of being reflexive and of reaching beyond the time and space of the immediate field context. All of the articles in this volume are based on high quality ethnographic research. In the decades since the Vietnam War, veteran memoirs have influenced Americans’ understanding of the conflict. Yet few historians or literary scholars have scrutinized how the genre has shaped the nation’s collective memory of the war and its aftermath. Instead, veterans’ accounts are mined for colorful quotes and then dropped from public discourse; are accepted as factual sources with little attention to how memory, no matter how authentic, can diverge from events; or are not contextualized in terms of the race, gender, or class of the narrators. Veteran Narratives and the Collective Memory of the Vietnam War is a landmark study of the cultural heritage of the war in Vietnam as presented through the experience of its American participants. Crossing disciplinary borders in ways rarely attempted by historians, John A. Wood unearths truths embedded in the memoirists’ treatments of combat, the Vietnamese people, race relations in the United States military, male-female relationships in the war zone, and veterans’ postwar troubles. Examining the “social laboratory” of the Israeli and Palestinian societies to better understand social conflicts and the construction of diverse and conflicting collective narratives, this book gives readers a window into Professor Shifra Sagy’s unique approach to intergroup conflicts and peace education. With a focus on both theory and practice, it describes the model of perceptions of collective narratives that she developed with her colleagues. The contributions here offer insight into the intergroup conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians, Palestinian Muslims and Christians, Jewish ‘National Religious’ and people of ultra-Orthodox faith, and Palestinians living in Israel and those living in the West Bank. Perceptions of collective narratives help crystallize social identity, a sense of community and national coherence, and a culture of conflict.
