Some Problems Of Development Financing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This study, originally a Ph.D. thesis accepted in the University of Bir mingham, is intended to present a critical analysis of some important problems of development financing. The boundaries of our subject-mat ter will be defined as follows. First of all, the discussion will be confined to the problems of a particular country: Turkey, during a particular period of time: the period of the First Five-Year Development Plan of 1963-67. Secondly, the problems to be discussed will be chosen from among those concerning the saving aspect of development financing. It has now become a widely used method in the literature to assume a dichotomy between the saving and investing aspects of the process of development financing. Thirdly, even within the saving aspect of development financing, no claim will be made to comprehensiveness. Preference will be given to analyzing in depth a few main questions rather than touching upon everything con cerning our subject. The study begins with an introduction to the social and economic framework of Turkey in Chapter 1, in which emphasis is given to factors that bear upon the problems to be discussed in the following chapters.

Contemporary Issues In Islamic Social Finance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The development of Islamic banking and finance (IBF) previously centred around three regions of the world: the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. However, in recent years, this has expanded, as interest in IBF has gained momentum in Australia, the USA, and Europe, especially in the UK. Several Western market players have established their own Islamic window or subsidiaries to cater to the need of growing Muslim populations in these regions. This book examines the recent developments in IBF, particularly in the context of Islamic social finance instruments, such as Islamic microfinance, halal education, takaful, mutual funds, and waqf. It covers the religiosity, spirituality, and tawhid index, which promotes social well-being and empowerment. The book is interdisciplinary, and theories, practice, and key issues are presented simultaneously, introducing new ideas and techniques to the IBF community. Moreover, the book examines topics such as innovation in Islamic social finance instruments, advanced techniques of risk mitigation in Islamic capital markets, marketing and the halal industry, and shari’ah-compliant instruments, which are critical to Islamic finance. The book is an essential reference text for academics and research students at the master’s and doctorate levels in IBF.

Critical Issues In International Financial Reform

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Critical Issues in International Financial Reform addresses weaknesses of the current international financial system and potential beneficial reforms. The focus is on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, but the authors also take into account relevant lessons from the experience of Canada, a country highly integrated into world and hemispheric trade and financial markets. Critical Issues offers a new perspective on a discussion too often dominated by interest groups that take strong, even rigid, positions on issues with limited understanding of the technical aspects of the issues, and little concern for the interests of the developing world. Its chapters have been written by experts in the economic, political, and social aspects of the international financial integration of developing countries. Financial crises and their associated social and economic traumas are the most apparent symptom that something is amiss in the process of world economic integration. But there are also broader questions about the nature and magnitude of the benefits and costs of increased international capital flows for different groups of countries in the developing and developed worlds. For example, even in the absence of turbulence, is it optimal for all participants that capital movements be as free as possible? Does capital inflow discourage domestic savings to a degree that should cause worry? Are some types of flows inherently more beneficial than others--for instance, direct investment flows versus flows into host stock markets? How can the instability of capital movements best be curtailed? These questions concern the contributors to this volume. This volume demonstrates that the evolution of the world financial system, its various problems, and what is or is not done about them require an understanding of the links among financial, economic, and political variables. Critical Issues in International Financial Reform is an important contribution to this debate, and will be of value to researchers in economic policy, history, and international politics. Albert Berry is professor of economics at the University of Toronto and research director of the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean. Gustavo Indart is special lecturer of economics and the coordinator of the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean at the University of Toronto.
