A study of English language change around Exeter, this book contributes to the work on urban regional speech. It presents ideas formed by applying modern sociolinguistic research techniques, and is aimed at those concerned with communication across local, social and generational boundaries.

Examines advanced approaches to sound change from various theoretical and methodological perspectives, including articulatory variation and modeling, speech perception mechanisms and neurobiological processes, geographical and social variation, and diachronic phonology.

Latin Linguistics is intended as an overview of the main areas of linguistics geared specifically to the scholar of Latin. The book consists of eight chapters: an introduction followed by discussions of phonology, morphology, syntax, variation linguistics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics, with a final chapter discussing texts from three different periods to demonstrate how linguistic analysis can deepen our understanding of Latin. Most introductions to phonology cover a range of theories, such as Autosegmental Phonology or Optimality Theory; these contribute relatively little to our understanding of Latin as such. On the other hand, a Latinist needs to know how we can reconstruct pronunciation, what the limits of reconstruction are, and how closely orthography mirrors pronunciation. My chapter on phonology deals with these aspects. The same can be said, mutatis mutandis, for the other chapters. What makes this book unique, then, is the fact that it covers a wide range of topics in a deliberately selective way, tailored to the needs of Latinists.

Explanations for sound change have traditionally focused on identifying the inception of change, that is, the identification of perturbations of the speech signal, conditioned by physiological constraints on articulatory and/or auditory mechanisms, which affect the way speech sounds are analyzed by the listener. While this emphasis on identifying the nature of intrinsic variation in speech has provided important insights into the origins of widely attested cross-linguistic sound changes, the nature of phonologization - the transition from intrinsic phonetic variation to extrinsic phonological encoding - remains largely unexplored. This volume showcases the current state of the art in phonologization research, bringing together work by leading scholars in sound change research from different disciplinary and scholarly traditions. The authors investigate the progression of sound change from the perspectives of speech perception, speech production, phonology, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, computer science, statistics, and social and cognitive psychology. The book highlights the fruitfulness of collaborative efforts among phonologists and specialists from neighbouring disciplines in seeking unified theoretical explanations for the origins of sound patterns in language, as well as improved syntheses of synchronic and diachronic phonology.

The starting point for this Research Topic was a Priority Programme on experimental research in phonology and phonetics which was funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) from 2006 to 2013. Based on this programme, the aim of this Research Topic is to draw together empirical work in the field of segmental and prosodic processing and representation and phonological theory. Contributions are encouraged that focus on the exploration of human cognitive, articulatory and perceptual abilities dealing with all types of phonetic and phonological entities. More specifically, papers are encouraged that address the interface of the speech sound systems investigated in phonology, the representation about articulation, perception, acquisition and processing established in phonetics and psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics. Topics of investigation could be: (1) phonological representations in the mental lexicon – specified minimally in terms of categorical phonological information or as variable phonetic imprint of the occurrences in the input, (2) sounds and sound-changing processes – systemic and functional aspects, (3) prosodic units such as syllables and metrical feet, as well as the phonological phrases that are connected to syntactic units of the sentence – systemic- properties, processing and phonetic consequences, (4) tones as building blocks of the sentence melody – their relation to the level of linguistic expressions on the one hand, their phonetic realisation (e.g., tonal height and contours) and perception on the other hand. Experimental contributions making use of behavioural methods including eye movement studies and methods like EEG, fMRI, MEG and EPA to investigate production and perception of phonetic and phonological entities are particularly welcome. Research on sound change often focuses on vowels, yet consonantal sound change also offers fascinating insights into language development and variation. This pioneering book provides a detailed investigation of consonantal sound change in English, by analyzing a large corpus of specifically designed field recordings from Austin, Texas. It offers one of the most in-depth analyses of /str/-retraction to date, drawing comparisons with studies of change in the distinguishing phonetic features of other varieties of English, and with studies of /str/-retraction in other Germanic languages. It further deepens our understanding of sound change by including qualitative data to position the sound change in the social reality of Austin, showing that specific sound changes are universally driven by age, gender and ethnicity. The results provide a testing ground for models of sociolinguistic and sound change, and highlight the importance of the social fabric of language in modeling language change.
