BOOK EXCERPT:
In the early 20th century, South Bend, Indiana's population more than tripled. Established industries like Studebaker and the Singer Sewing company rose to unprecedented heights of production, new businesses took root, and immigrants flooded into the area. Photo postcards, originally a quick and inexpensive form of communication, became key documents of South Bend's growth, recording events, businesses, landmarks, and people. Through nearly 200 vintage postcards, this book details South Bend's story from the turn of the 20th century to the aftermath of World War II. These images give a glimpse of lost glamour, representing the city as past generations witnessed it.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The land now called St. Joseph County was familiar ground to Native Americans long before recorded history. Many Indians, including the local Potawatomie and Miami, trod the well-worn path that offered a two-mile portage between the St. Joseph River (and Lake Michigan) to the Kankakee River and eventually the Mississippi River. Pierre F. Navarre built a log cabin beside the St. Joseph River in 1820, and began a settlement that would eventually become South Bend and Mishawaka in St. Joseph County. The over 200 vintage images in this book, drawn from St. Joseph County and Mishawaka as well as South Bend, look back at the commerce, industry, and businesses like Studebaker, Ball Band, Singer, and Bendix, which grew on the rich resources of the area. Education was a high priority for early settlers, and they established one-room schoolhouses and Notre Dame University. The photographs show public places, buildings, and servants, some long gone, others that are still with us today. And of course, there are pictures of the people, the homes they built, and the activities they enjoyed in their northern Indiana home.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Georgetown and the Waccamaw Neck in South Carolina are steeped in historic and folkloric literature, reflective of the area's rich cultural past. This volume brings that treasury to bear in a collection of vintage postcards from the region compiled for the first time. You will see how the area's aristocratic past ties to present-day Georgetown and the nearby resorts of Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet and the renowned Brookgreen Gardens. Also included are nostalgic views of life on plantations along the Santee Rivers, which relied upon Georgetown for economic trade, then and now. The communities depicted in this book were among America's wealthiest 150 years ago. That legacy is still seen in architectural remnants-plantations, churches, and town houses now restored to their former grandeur.

Illustrated with over 350 exceptional photo postcards taken from archives and private collections across the country, the scope of the Real Photo Postcard Guide spans technical considerations of production, characteristics of superior images, collecting categories, and methods of research for dating photo postcards and investigating their photographers. BOOK EXCERPT:
The Great Fire of May 3, 1901 marked at once the end and the beginning of the City of Jacksonville. A thriving port and a center for business and tourism until that point, Jacksonville was devastated by the conflagration, and yet, even before the ashes had cooled, a building boom began. Prominent and aspiring architects flocked to the area and the opportunities it afforded them to create a "twentieth century city." Jacksonville's ensuing era of reconstruction and growth, which would continue until the United States entered World War I in 1917, helped to define the city's present personality and appearance.
