Spatial Analysis In Archaeology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This 1976 text is a pioneering study in the applications to archaeology of modern statistical and quantitative techniques. The authors show how these techniques, when sensitively employed, can dramatically extend and refine the information presented in distribution maps and other analyses of spatial relationships. Techniques of interpretation 'by inspection' can now be made more powerful and rigorous; at the same time interest has turned from the examination of such sites and artefacts as 'things' to the spatial relationships between such things, their relationships to one another and to landscape features, soils and other resources. This book was the first to apply the available techniques systematically to the special problems and interests of archaeologists. It also demonstrates to geographers and other social scientists who may be familiar with analogous applications in their own fields the exciting interdisciplinary developments this facilitates, for example in studies of exchange networks, trade and settlement patterns, and cultural history.

Archaeological Spatial Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Effective spatial analysis is an essential element of archaeological research; this book is a unique guide to choosing the appropriate technique, applying it correctly and understanding its implications both theoretically and practically. Focusing upon the key techniques used in archaeological spatial analysis, this book provides the authoritative, yet accessible, methodological guide to the subject which has thus far been missing from the corpus. Each chapter tackles a specific technique or application area and follows a clear and coherent structure. First is a richly referenced introduction to the particular technique, followed by a detailed description of the methodology, then an archaeological case study to illustrate the application of the technique, and conclusions that point to the implications and potential of the technique within archaeology. The book is designed to function as the main textbook for archaeological spatial analysis courses at undergraduate and post-graduate level, while its user-friendly structure makes it also suitable for self-learning by archaeology students as well as researchers and professionals.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and related spatial technologies have a new and powerful role to play in archaeological interpretation. Beginning with a conceptual approach to the representation of space adopted by GIS, this book examines spatial databases; the acquisition and compilation of data; the analytical compilation of data; the anal

Archaeology And The Information Age

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Traditional methods of making archaeological data available are becoming increasingly inadequate. Thanks to improved techniques for examining data from multiple viewpoints, archaeologists are now in a position to record different kinds of data, and to explore that data more fully than ever before. The growing availablility of computer networks and other technologies means that communication should become increasingly available to international archaeologists. Will this result in the democratisation of archaeological knowledge on a global basis? Contributors from Western and Eastern Europe, the Far East, Africa and the Americas seek to answer this and other questions about the way in which modern technology is revolutionising archaeological knowledge.

Exploratory Multivariate Analysis In Archaeology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume presents four techniques of multivariate analysis commonly used by archaeologists (principal component analysis, correspondence analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis). Employing "ordinary language" and real data sets, and including extensive literature reviews, the book illustrates how these statistical techniques can be applied to specific archaeological questions. A new introduction by the author updates his discussion in light of subsequent developments in the field of quantitative archaeology. Originally published by Edinburgh University Press in 1994.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a short, readable introduction to historical archaeology, which focuses on modern history in all its fascinating regional, cultural, and ethnic diversity. Accessibly covering key methods and concepts, including fundamental theories and principles, the history of the field, and basic definitions, Historical Archaeology also includes a practical look at career prospects for interested readers. Orser discusses central topics of archaeological research such as time and space, survey and excavation methods, and analytical techniques, encouraging readers to consider the possible meanings of artifacts. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience as an historical archaeologist, the book’s perspective ranges from the local to the global in order to demonstrate the real importance of this subject to our understanding of the world in which we live today. The third edition of this popular textbook has been significantly revised and expanded to reflect recent developments and discoveries in this exciting area of study. Intrasite Spatial Analysis In Theory And Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A full coverage of the possible applications of statistical approaches to material scatters within mainly gatherer-hunter assemblages. Blankholm attempts to leven the content with a useful review of the history and aims of intrasite analysis, but the core of the book are two chapters covering relevant statistics and simulation studies. A useful feature is a fully worked example of application to the archaeological data from Mesolithic Barmose, in South Zealand; backed up by included overlays. Appendix B is a guide to the operation of the computer package, Arcospace 2.0. Dense, but written with an awareness of the reader's and practitioner's problems.
