BOOK EXCERPT:
This book presents the separation principle which is also known as the principle of separation of estimation and control and states that, under certain assumptions, the problem of designing an optimal feedback controller for a stochastic system can be solved by designing an optimal observer for the system's state, which feeds into an optimal deterministic controller for the system. Thus, the problem may be divided into two halves, which simplifies its design. In the context of deterministic linear systems, the first instance of this principle is that if a stable observer and stable state feedback are built for a linear time-invariant system (LTI system hereafter), then the combined observer and feedback are stable. The separation principle does not true for nonlinear systems in general. Another instance of the separation principle occurs in the context of linear stochastic systems, namely that an optimum state feedback controller intended to minimize a quadratic cost is optimal for the stochastic control problem with output measurements. The ideal solution consists of a Kalman filter and a linear-quadratic regulator when both process and observation noise are Gaussian. The term for this is linear-quadratic-Gaussian control. More generally, given acceptable conditions and when the noise is a martingale (with potential leaps), a separation principle, also known as the separation principle in stochastic control, applies when the noise is a martingale (with possible jumps).

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book aims to bring together the latest innovative knowledge, analysis, and synthesis of fractional control problems of nonlinear systems as well as some related applications. Fractional order systems (FOS) are dynamical systems that can be modelled by a fractional differential equation carried with a non-integer derivative. In the last few decades, the growth of science and engineering systems has considerably stimulated the employment of fractional calculus in many subjects of control theory, for example, in stability, stabilization, controllability, observability, observer design, and fault estimation. The application of control theory in FOS is an important issue in many engineering applications. So, to accurately describe these systems, the fractional order differential equations have been introduced.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this book, the stability analysis and estimator design problems are discussed for delayed discrete-time memristive neural networks. In each chapter, the analysis problems are firstly considered, where the stability, synchronization and other performances (e.g., robustness, disturbances attenuation level) are investigated within a unified theoretical framework. In this stage, some novel notions are put forward to reflect the engineering practice. Then, the estimator design issues are discussed where sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the existence of the desired estimators with guaranteed performances. Finally, the theories and techniques developed in previous parts are applied to deal with some issues in several emerging research areas. The book Unifies existing and emerging concepts concerning delayed discrete memristive neural networks with an emphasis on a variety of network-induced phenomena Captures recent advances of theories, techniques, and applications of delayed discrete memristive neural networks from a network-oriented perspective Provides a series of latest results in two popular yet interrelated areas, stability analysis and state estimation of neural networks Exploits a unified framework for analysis and synthesis by designing new tools and techniques in combination with conventional theories of systems science, control engineering and signal processing Gives simulation examples in each chapter to reflect the engineering practice

BOOK EXCERPT:
Dissipativity, as a natural mechanism of energy interchange is common to many physical systems that form the basis of modern automated control applications. Over the last decades it has turned out as a useful concept that can be generalized and applied in an abstracted form to very different system setups, including ordinary and partial differential equation models. In this monograph, the basic notions of stability, dissipativity and systems theory are connected in order to establish a common basis for designing system monitoring and control schemes. The approach is illustrated with a set of application examples covering finite and infinite-dimensional models, including a ship steering model, the inverted pendulum, chemical and biological reactors, relaxation oscillators, unstable heat equations and first-order hyperbolic integro-differential equations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book reports on a set of advances relating to nonlinear observer design, with a special emphasis on high-gain observers. First, it covers the design of filters and their addition to the observer for reducing noise, a topic that has been so far neglected in the literature. Further, it describes the adaptive re-design of nonlinear observers to reduce the effect of parametric uncertainty. It discusses several limitations of classical methods, presenting a set of successfull solutions, which are mathematically formalised through Lyapunov stability analysis, and in turn validated via numerical simulations. In the second part of the book, two applications of the adaptive nonlinear observers are described, such in the estimation of the liquid water in a hydrogen fuel cell and in the solution of a common cybersecurity problem, i.e. false data injection attacks in DC microgrids. All in all, this book offers a comprehensive report on the state-of-the-art in nonlinear observer design for energy systems, including mathematical demonstrations, and numerical and and experimental validations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In practice, actuators often undergo failures and various factors influence its effectiveness. Also due to the increasing complexity of large-scale systems, subsystems are often interconnected, whereas the interactions between any two subsystems are difficult to deal with. This book details a series of new methodologies of designing and analyzing adaptive backstepping control systems involving treatment on actuator failures, subsystem interactions and nonsmooth nonlinearities. Moreover, it discusses some interesting open issues in adaptive failure accommodation, decentralized adaptive control and distributed adaptive coordinated control.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book focuses on the control and state estimation problems for dynamical network systems with complex samplings subject to various network-induced phenomena. It includes a series of control and state estimation problems tackled under the passive sampling fashion. Further, it explains the effects from the active sampling fashion, i.e., event-based sampling is examined on the control/estimation performance, and novel design technologies are proposed for controllers/estimators. Simulation results are provided for better understanding of the proposed control/filtering methods. By drawing on a variety of theories and methodologies such as Lyapunov function, linear matrix inequalities, and Kalman theory, sufficient conditions are derived for guaranteeing the existence of the desired controllers and estimators, which are parameterized according to certain matrix inequalities or recursive matrix equations. Covers recent advances of control and state estimation for dynamical network systems with complex samplings from the engineering perspective Systematically introduces the complex sampling concept, methods, and application for the control and state estimation Presents unified framework for control and state estimation problems of dynamical network systems with complex samplings Exploits a set of the latest techniques such as linear matrix inequality approach, Vandermonde matrix approach, and trace derivation approach Explains event-triggered multi-rate fusion estimator, resilient distributed sampled-data estimator with predetermined specifications This book is aimed at researchers, professionals, and graduate students in control engineering and signal processing.
