"My guiltiest pleasure is Harry Stephen Keeler. He may been the greatest bad writer America has ever produced. Or perhaps the worst great writer. I do not know. There are few faults you can accuse him of that he is not guilty of. But I love him." -- Neil Gaiman Ho hum. Another day; another corpse dredged up from the depths of Lake Michigan. This time it’s a body having the bottom half of a negro man and the top half of a Chinese woman joined together at the waist by some kind of greenish glue. But we don’t linger long at this unpleasant scene because Angus MacWhorter and his Mammoth Motorized Show are in another pickle. If Angus can’t pay back $3000 -- in $100 bills whose serial numbers must be evenly divisible by 13! -- he’ll lose the circus to the dastardly Geispitz Gmohling. But the needed bills are on the other side of Old Twistibus, the windingest road in the world, and Giff O’Dell, who has the bills, is obsessed with solving the Crazy Corpse murder. Now that is a pickle!

Welcome to Orphans Asylum by Mike Krecioch. The author has experienced orphanage life and now has written his story. How the author and his two siblings wind up in a large orphanagewhile both parents are aliveis the central issue of the story. You will be transported back to the early 1950s to experience the orphanage life with all its smells, sounds, and tastes. What was it truly like to live within the confines of an orphanage with all the daily routines? This is a story about another time and place, told with grace and honesty. Saint Hedwig Orphanage (19111961), located in Niles, Illinois, at Harlem and Touhy avenues, was more than an orphanage to more than seven thousand children. It was a familya family of predominantly Polish children. Some were true orphans; others were children of broken homes. Under the direction of Monsignor Francis S. Rusch (18841959), the task of parenting and educating the children was entrusted to the Felician Sisters. The site of Saint Hedwig Orphanage, is now comprised of modern multifamily condominiums. But to those who attended Saint Hedwig, their time there will never be forgotten. All the children who called Saint Hedwig their home from 1911 to 1961 will always be remembered. Saint Hedwig alumni and their families continue to keep in touch through a newsletter entitled The Hedwigian II, which is published three times a year. When Saint Hedwig Orphanage was established, it consisted of one building. On July 12, 1911, sixty-three Polish children were transferred from Saint Josephs Orphanage to Saint Hedwig. Further construction took place, and ultimately, Saint Hedwig consisted of ten buildings on more than forty acres of land. These buildings remained the orphanage home up until 1961, when the buildings were renovated to become the junior college department of University of Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary. In 1968, the school became a four-year college and was renamed Niles College of Loyola University. The Archdiocese of Chicago ultimately sold the site to developers, who razed the orphanage buildings and constructed multifamily condominiums. For those who would like to find out what orphanage life was like during those times, you must read Orphans Asylum.

They arrive alive. They always leave dead. But first, they give me their confessions. My name is Jack Steen. That name shouldn’t mean anything to you, unless you’re about to die - and then I’m your bloody guardian angel. I work as a night nurse in the Asylum for the Criminally Insane. I offer my patients a deal: in exchange for an easy death, I want their story. Not the one anyone can read about in the papers, I want the real story - the one they haven't told anyone else. Some of these killers have never confessed to their crimes, some kept certain information to themselves...those are the stories I want. If they give them to me, I'll make their death...easier. They're already dying, that's why they're now my patients. If they play nice, I can make their death less painful. My name is the only real name you’ll find in this book. I won’t tell you which Asylum I work at. I won’t tell you the names of those dying. But I won’t lie to you. You’ll read exactly what I’m told. If you’re smart, if you’re deranged enough to read between the lines, you’ll know who is telling the story. The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. They could be playing their final game with me by messing with my head. Now, maybe they're messing with yours too. Inside this book are 4 confessions: Patient 424 is a father who wanted to protect his little girl. Patient 1001 is a pig farmer who never should have had children. Patient 523 wants you to believe he's the brother of a mob boss. Patient 983 would argue she should receive the Mother of the Year award. WARNING: There is swearing in this book. And some stories might be a trigger for something you have a hard time handling. But, these are the confessions of serial killers, mass murderers, and such, so what do you expect?
