Stour Seasons

BOOK EXCERPT:

From the time that John Constable made its waterways and rural landscapes famous, the Stour Valley in East Anglia has been a haunt for artists, writers, poets, musicians and gardeners. Ronald Blythe perpetuates this rich artistic heritage from an ancient farmhouse, with its three-acre naturalistic garden, that has been a gathering place for literary and artistic friends for almost seventy years. Stour Seasons is the tenth collection of his Word From Wormingford columns that have appeared on the back page of the Church Times for over 20 years. Britain’s greatest living rural writer observes in rich detail the gifts that each season of the year brings and in doing so, evokes a world of beauty, friendship and wonder at the simple pleasures that make everyday life the miracle that it is.

Blythe Spirit

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

'An intimate and insightful portrait of the peerless observer of rural life' RICHARD MABEY 'Moving, candid, vivid, it is all that we could hope for in a memoir of this unique and treasured writer' ROWAN WILLIAMS 'As a boy I dreamed of scholars and saints wandering around markets and cornfields, and of artists and poets sitting under the trees.' Ronald Blythe (1922-2023), author of the inimitable Akenfield, was a prolific and poetic chronicler of rural and spiritual life, nature and literature. He spent a joyful century close to his Suffolk roots, time travelling in his imagination and publishing forty books and thousands of essays. His wide creative network included John and Christine Nash, Cedric Morris, Benjamin Britten, E. M. Forster, Patricia Highsmith and Richard Mabey. From finding Thomas Hardy in February rain and John Clare in country tracks, to talking to his white cat and reading through a dragonfly's wings, the Blythe gift was to marvel in the everyday. His writing was intimate, meditative and often laced with a wry humour, inviting readers to share his enchanting perspective on the world. Yet few knew the 'real' Ronald Blythe. Leaving school at 14, he educated himself in libraries, churches and walks in the East Anglian landscape. He never spoke about early poverty and traumatic experience in the war, while his sexuality was kept private except from those closest to him. Drawing on unparalleled access to letters, notebooks, published works, drafts, and conversations from decades of friendship, Ian Collins tells the full story of Ronald Blythe for the first time. The result is a sensitive, revelatory portrait which celebrates a fascinating, complex man and casts new light on one of our greatest writers.

The Roman Villa In Britain

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Roman Villa in Britain (1969) is a comprehensive examination of Roman villas in Romano-Britain in a series of essays by six specialists. H.C. Bowen, well-known for his work on early field systems, examines the evidence for the native Celtic agriculture which was practised in pre-Roman Britain and continued to form the basis of the country’s economy after the conquest. The ground plans of the villas, and their implications, are discussed by Sir Ian Richmond, while David Smith considers the mosaic pavements, both as implications of the wealth of their owners and as evidence for the existence of distinct local schools of mosaicists; Joan Liversidge deals with internal decoration and furnishing. A.L.F. Rivet reflects on the social and economic implications of the changing fortunes of the villas, and Graham Webster discusses the future of villa studies from the standpoint of the modern excavator.

Always End With The Beginning In Mind

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The world likes to believe life is a series of endings. Some are good, others bad, but things always end. In the modern age, the movie ends, the television show ends, the book finishes with "The End", and we start to believe life is about endings. Yet life continues, without end. Recently, my young nephew died, but the next day life went on without him. This book is based on the premise that endings are just new beginnings. Everyone can end, with the beginning in mind. Giving up the concept of "everything ends" is one of the most important steps in business continuity. People love to talk about Succession Planning, but few ever accomplish the task. The numbers are staggering. The US Department of Labor Statistics tell us after one year in business, 20% of new businesses in America fail, but after 20 years only about 20% of those same businesses will have survived. Of those who survive, less than 20% will continue to a second generation! Most businesses have a cessation plan (a plan that leads to a business ceasing to exist), while very few have succession plans (a plan that leads to a business not only continuing, but thriving after the founder exits). In his book, "Always End with the Beginning in Mind", Donald White takes you on his journey that resulted in a successful business continuation, and will give a founder of a business the steps necessary for a succession plan to actually succeed. A well-thought out and properly executed Succession Plan is a classic win-win. In fact, it is a win-win-win. It is a win for the company, namely the clients and staff who are able to enjoy continuity after the founder's exit. It is a win for the successor, who is able to build on the success of the founder. Finally, it is a win for the founder, who is able to exit on their own volition and see what they have built continue to prosper for years to come. Firms can succeed into perpetuity. They do not need to eventually cease. A businessperson who exits a business without seeing their exit as an ending, but as a new beginning, both for themselves and the business, can enjoy seeing the firm they spent a lifetime building continue to prosper after the business transitions to new leadership and simultaneously enjoy a new season of life personally. Do not leave business continuity to fate! Read this book and discover the tools necessary to move from a reactive cessation plan to a proactive plan of succession.

Draw In The Dunes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From the author of the critically acclaimed golf history The Longest Shot, Neil Sagebiel's Draw in the Dunes is the gripping account of a legendary Cup competition, and the story of golf's greatest act of sportsmanship. In 1969, the 42-year history of biennial golf matches between the United States and Great Britain reached its climax. The U.S., led by Jack Nicklaus, had dominated competitive golf for years; Great Britain, led by Tony Jacklin, was the undisputed underdog. But in spite of having lost 14 of 17 Ryder Cups in the past, the British entered the 1969 Ryder Cup as determined as the Americans were dominant. What followed was the most compelling, controversial, and contentious Ryder Cup the sport had ever seen. Draw in the Dunes is a story of personal and professional conflict, from the nervousness displayed at the very beginning of the Ryder Cup matches—when one man could not tee his golf ball—to the nerve displayed by Nicklaus and Jacklin, who battled each other all the way to the final moment of the final match. Throughout the Cup, 17 of the 32 matches were not decided until the final hole. Most electrifying was Nicklaus and Jacklin's contest, which decided the fate of the Ryder Cup. At the last putt, Nicklaus conceded to Jacklin, keeping the cup for the Americans while letting the British walk away with their most successful Ryder Cup result in years. From this event, which came to be known as "The Concession," Nicklaus and Jacklin forged a lifelong friendship and ushered in a new era of golf.
