BOOK EXCERPT:
Traditional strategy assumes stability and predictability. Today's world is better characterised by turbulence, uncertainty, novelty and ambiguity - conditions that contribute disruptive changes and trigger the search for new ways of coping. This book aims to become the premier guide on how to do scenario planning to support strategy and public policy. Co-authored by three experts in the field, the book presents The Oxford Scenario Planning Approach (OSPA). The approach is both intellectually rigorous and practical. Methodological choices and theoretical aspects in practice are detailed in reference to the relevant literatures and grounded in 6 case studies the authors have been involved with. The book makes several contributions to the field, centred on how learning with scenario planning is supported by re-framing and re-perception; how this iterative process can be embedded in corporate or government settings, and how it helps those that it supports to do well in today's world. The book is written in an accessible style and will be a useful introductory text as well as a useful guide for the more experienced scenario planning practitioner and scholar.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume of New Directions for Institutional Research proposes and tests new approaches to institutional research (IR) that attempt to break down barriers to academic success, particularly focusing on minority students, working students, and others in nontraditional circumstances. The chapters in this volume review prior research on best practices as well as evaluations of retention programs and persistence by students of color, then go on to propose and test new approaches to assessment, action research, action inquiry, and evaluation. Lessons learned from this volume should contribute to strategies used by administrators and faculty for collaborative projects involving IR professionals and other higher education researchers in interventions designed to improve academic success for all students. This is the 130th volume of New Directions for Institutional Research, a quarterly publication published by Jossey-Bass. Access our complete list of New Directions for Institutional Research titles for a wide variety of IR topics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is about psychological disorders based on irrational fears - those apparently unmotivated, paralyzing, panic-filled, gutwrenching fears whose multiplicity and diversity are barely contained in the diagnoses phobias and obsessional disorders. The author, worldrenowned therapist Giorgio Nardone, offers a brief (usually less than 20 session) treatment method that leads to a change in the interpersonal, cognitive, and emotional organizations underlying these painful and all too-common problems. Therapists using a strategic framework focus on reframing patients' representations of self and other, and on changing the relational patterns that sustain fearful perceptions. Based on extensive research and illustrated with in-depth clinical examples, this book offers hope to those whose lives have been unnecessarily limited by their phobias and obsessions. Strategic brief therapy, as developed by John H. Weakland, Paul Watzlawick, and Richard Fisch, is based on a very simple idea problems are accidentally maintained by our repeated, failed attempts at solving them. In this book, Giorgio Nardone uses the strategic brief therapy lens to focus on how particular troubles are accidentally maintained and how therapist and client can overcome them. The follow- up (79 percent resolved and 7 percent much improved) certainly points to the efficacy of Nardone's approach. Giorgio Nardone's strategic psychotherapy model shows specific originality and an innovative quality compared to other brief therapy models. Phobic and obsessive disorders are difficult to treat. Nardone's model achieves rapid symptom remission even in severe forms of panic, fear, and phobia. This book is a very practical manual for professionals because it guides the reader clearly through the different stages of therapy and presents treatment protocol as well as concrete examples of results. A study of two clinical cases, complete with a transcript of therapy, not only enhances comprehension of the model but underscores the brilliance of the
