BOOK EXCERPT:
If you want to land your kids in therapy, then by all means, give them everything under the sun. In his work as a family psychologist, Michael Carr-Gregg has noticed a worrying trend in our modern parenting styles, which sees kids running riot and parents running for cover. In our desire to give our kids the best, we may have given them way too much, and overlooked the importance of setting boundaries. He believes it's a recipe for disaster. In Strictly Parenting, Michael asks parents to take a good hard look at the way they are parenting - to toughen up and stop trying to be their kids' best friends. He instead offers practical evidence-based solutions on how to take back the reins and start making the most of the precious family years. With a user-friendly A-Z guide covering all the tricky issues that parents encounter over the years - everything from birthday parties and bedtimes to sex and drugs - this is an invaluable and very timely resource for parents of all school-aged kids.

'Believe and trust in your children. But most of all, be kind.' Parents ask, 'Why are children so anxious?', 'Has my child got autism?', 'How do I calm a screaming baby, yelling child, or angry teenager?', and 'What can I do when my child wants to die?' Anxiety, autism, ADHD, and learning problems make school hard. Depression, self-harm, cyberbullying, and eating disorders are part of our complex lives. Stress, busyness, and a digital world changes parenting. Parenting is Forever reflects the ongoing conversations of a paediatrician with those who care for children. It is influenced by her experience as a parent and from helping more than 30,000 families over twenty-five years. Dr Elizabeth Green shares her practical tips for navigating the developmental stages of childhood. From before birth, through early childhood and adolescence, to adulthood. Parenting is not a competition. It's okay to fail and try again. That's what makes us better parents.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Along with development, parents and children are involved in reciprocal exchanges within which both co-adapt their emerging relationships. With this transactional assumption, the eco-cultural approach stimulates researchers to study parenting from a complex perspective and to consider multiple influences shaping children’s and families’ lives. This book offers a wide, concrete eco-cultural perspective on parenting, addressing current issues such as wellbeing and emotional security, sibling relationships, vulnerable children, family-school partnerships, digital parenting, adolescence and risks, resilience in adversity, and immigration and cultural diversity. Written by researchers from all over the world, the twelve chapters in this volume testify to the strength of the plurality method for approaching parenting.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Doepke and Zilibotti investigate how economic forces shape how parents raise their children. They show that in countries with increasing economic inequality, such as the United States, parents push harder to ensure their children have a path to security and success. Economics has transformed the hands-off parenting of the 1960s and '70s into a frantic, overscheduled activity. Growing inequality has also resulted in an increasing 'parenting gap' between richer and poorer families, raising the disturbing prospect of diminished social mobility and fewer opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The authors discuss how investments in early childhood development and the design of education systems factor into the parenting equation, and how economics can help shape policies that will contribute to the ideal of equal opportunity for all. --From publisher description.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The most complete picture to date of the moral worlds of the political left and right and how their different views relate to specific political issues The left and right will always have strong policy disagreements, but constructive debate and negotiation are not possible when each side demonizes the other. We need to move past our poisonous politics. In this book, social psychologist Ronnie Janoff-Bulman provides a new framework for understanding why and how we disagree. Janoff-Bulman asks readers to consider the challenging possibility that both liberalism and conservatism are morally based and reflect genuine concern for the country. Moral psychology is an invaluable lens for understanding the roots of political differences. She presents a "Model of Moral Motives" that maps the most fundamental motivations recognized by psychology--approach and avoidance--onto these differences. Liberal morality focuses on providing for the group's well-being and ensuring social justice. Conservative morality focuses on protecting the group from threats and preserving order. These moralities can account for the psychological differences between liberals and conservatives and for why certain positions resonate on each side of the political spectrum. Why, for example, do conservatives oppose abortion and favor unfettered free markets while liberals favor a woman's right to choose and economic regulation? Understanding that our political differences are rooted in two natural forms of morality can help us begin to detoxify our politics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The open access book provides a critical account of parenthood in Polish society. It uses a qualitative perspective to show how mothers and fathers engage with parenthood and also function in the labour market. Parenting in contemporary Poland is not only affected by individual preferences and choices, but significantly by the institutional context, in particular the family policy system, as well as socio-cultural norms of how men and women should fulfill parental roles. The author distinguishes between different kinds of work done in connection to parenthood and shows how the existing institutional system reinforces gender and other forms of social inequalities even in a post-communist state like Poland. The author demonstrates that Polish society has different expectations and institutional norms related to work and gender norms compared to those in long-standing democracies in Europe and elsewhere. The book also shows that the experiences of parenthood in Poland are different between men and women, between single and coupled parents, and based on economic and other resources. This book is of interest to social science students and researchers of family studies, parenting, sociology of work, and social structure in post-communist societies.
