As the number of international students in Chinese higher education increases steadily, this volume is one of the first to focus on their many and varied experiences. With contributions focusing on such topics as intercultural adaptation, soft power and interculturality, language learning strategies and the intercultural, and transformations in perspective, this volume provides the reader with a broad overview of the latest advances in the field of interculturality and study abroad. In order to promote Canadian students’ mobility to China, it is essential to understand their motivations to study in Chinese universities because it influences their learning experiences. Through the application of the push-pull model as a conceptual framework (Altbach, 1998; Mazzarol & Soutar, 2002), this study explores the factors that motivate Canadian exchange students to study in China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 non-Chinese spoken Canadian exchange students from 9 universities. The findings reveal that both push and pull factors affect students’ decisions to study in China. The key push factors are learning the Chinese language and culture and personal growth; the primary pull factors are China’s potential for economic development, future opportunities, and the availability of exchange programs. This study provides stakeholders with insights into designing exchange programs targeted to students’ needs and developing marketing strategies to attract Canadian international students

This book illustrates how the one-dot theory, which is a dialectical study, is well suited to describing, explaining and inferring contemporary China’s past, present and future. It argues that since October 1949, the field of contemporary China studies has been dominated by modified and abandoned non-dialectical theories and models. It also challenges selected non-dialectical theories and models which were first generated in the West, such as the game theory and rational (choice) theory. With its emphasis on methodology, the book offers a valuable resource for academics, researchers and practitioners alike with an interest in logically, systematically and coherently unraveling Taiwan’s and mainland China’s contemporary politics and international relations.

From the perspective of behavioural science, this book systematically investigates organizational learning in Chinese organizations based on multilevel theory over the past 20 years. The findings contribute to the theory and practice of organizational learning and give insights into the construction of learning organizations. Revisiting existing studies on organizational learning, the author reconceptualises organizational learning and constructs an integrative model, which is corroborated and then supplemented by empirical research. Based on samples and materials from 3,000 managers and employees in organizations from all over China, the book further elaborates this integrative model covering the multilevel structure, trans-level functions and generative mechanisms that figure prominently in organizational learning in Chinese organizations. This framework helps enhance the organizational learning ability and the establishment of a learning culture, while offering possible directions for updating research methods and a stereoscopic theory of organizational learning. The book will be a good reference for management practitioners, students and academics interested in organizational behaviour, human resource management, innovation management, and multilevel perspective.

The Netherlands have a long and proud history in Chinese studies. This volume collects not only articles that trace the historical development of Chinese studies in the Netherlands from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present and beyond, but also studies that deal with Dutch research in specific disciplines within Chinese studies. Chinese studies in the Netherlands originated from the needs of the Dutch colonial administration in the Dutch East Indies, but developed a strong philological emphasis in the first part of the twentieth century, to turn increasingly towards disciplinary research on modern and contemporary China in the last few decades. Eminent China scholar David Shambaugh's China Goes Global is the sweeping synthesis of that nation's growing prominence on the world stage that we have been waiting for. Thirty years ago, China's role in global affairs beyond its immediate East Asian periphery was decidedly minor. Its military was extremely weak, and it had little geostrategic power. As Shambaugh charts, though, China's expanding economic power has allowed it extend its reach and influence virtually everywhere. After establishing the main precondition—the astounding growth of the Chinese economy—Shambaugh turns his focus to the manifestations of China's global ambitions: its growing military power, characterized best by its current pursuit of a blue-water navy; its increasing cultural influence (i.e., "soft power"); and its new prominence in global governance institutions like the G-20. He is no alarmist, however. Rather, he will draw on his extremely deep knowledge of the subject to offer a balanced and well reasoned account of where China is now and where he thinks it is headed.
