At the turn of the century Sudbury was a town set on the railway line, with a population of about 2,000. The community was smaller than Sault Ste. Marie and Copper Cliff to the west, and to the east, North Bay and Pembroke. Now, nearly 100 years later, Sudbury is the largest city in northeastern Ontario. it is also the centre of many governmental, business, social, educational, media, medical, and other professional services in the region. Sudbury: Rail Town to Regional Capital, which honours the centenary of the community's incorporation as a town in 1893, analyses Sudbury decade by decade, describing the ongoing changes in the community and their impact on citizens. The book also examines the forces that shaped the city's destiny and argues that Sudbury is far more than a single-industry town based on mining. Grounded in new research and written in an accessible style by a team of local scholars, the book, with numerous maps and photographs will appeal to urban historians as well as the general reader both within and beyond the city.

Sudbury, located 20 miles west of Boston, was incorporated in 1639. It has a rich, unique history as one of the first colonial settlements. In 1676, it was the site of one of the major battles of the Indian War, called King Philip's War. In 1775, Sudbury sent more than 350 men to Concord to stand up for liberty against the British. Once known as the "carnation capital," Sudbury still has two of the largest wholesale greenhouses in the state. Historic landmarks, including Longfellow's Wayside Inn --made famous under the ownership of Henry Ford from 1923 to 1945--draw thousands of tourists every year. The town attracts residents because of its natural beauty, stone walls, scenic roads, and history. Sudbury remained a small agricultural town until the 1950s and has become a desirable suburban town known for its excellent schools, attractive homes, and community spirit.

From haunted mine shafts to inexplicable lights in the northern sky, there are strange things afoot in the peaceful northern municipality of Sudbury; eerie phenomenon that will amaze, give you pause, make you wonder, and have you looking twice at what might first appear to be innocent shadows.

Original documents relating to minor foundation illustrate lower levels of local society and government of the town.The Benedictine priory of St Bartholomew outside Sudbury was a cell of Westminster Abbey founded in the reign of Henry I by Wulfric the moneyer. Although a small and poorly-endowed establishment, it has nevertheless, and unusually, left over 130 original documents in the muniments at Westminster, enabling this volume in the Suffolk Charters series to be the first to be devoted to a group of original documents rather than medieval transcriptions. Dating mostly from the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, the collection illustrates the lower levels of local society and the government of the town, providing a wealth of evidence for trades and occupations, place names and personal names in the Sudbury area, including the earliest known reeves and mayors of Sudbury. Of particular interest are a late-fourteenth century inventory of the priory which brings alive the physical surroundings of the monks, and the quantities of seals attached to the charters, including an unusual number of women's seals.
