Summary And Insight Brave New World By Aldous Huxley

BOOK EXCERPT:

Written by Aldous Huxley in 1932, Brave New World remains worthy of its label as one of the most sinister, shocking, unforgettable, and bewitching novels of all time. With his deep understanding of human nature, philosophy, science, religion, history, politics, Shakespeare, and technology, Huxley proves himself to be quite the professor as well as intellectual provocateur and satirist. Huxley’s star pupil at Eton happened to be none other than Eric Arthur Blair who would adopt the pen name, “George Orwell.” In fact, we see many similarities between Brave New World and 1984, for which I also wrote a summary. In Brave New World and 1984, Huxley and Orwell tackle what may be the most important elements of all to determine the destiny of the human species, how we interact with each other, and how the governments and big business act to influence our interactions. Both novels will undoubtedly remain perpetually timely as the authors have nailed down the essence of human nature itself in its formation of various forms of societies. In reading these books the reader cannot help but relate them to his or her life and society to measure up where they stand. The reader becomes so absorbed into the story that they become an opinionated participant. About the Best Seller Summary Series A summary should not substitute for its parent manuscript. A Best Sellers Summary book provides a harmonizing simplification of each chapter. Main points and take-aways in a fraction of the time, and at a fraction of the cost, gently embrace the reader with vital facts and themes. Some Best Seller summaries offer further insight and revelations, or even relevant added material, for example, in the form of a rebuttal. In this summary for Brave New World, a summary for the action in each chapter is accompanied by an analysis for each chapter with further insight.

Modern Utopian Fictions From H G Wells To Iris Murdoch

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Criticism on utopian subjects has generally neglected the literary or fictional dimension of utopia. The reason for such neglect may be that earlier utopian fictions tended to be written by what one would nowadays call social scientists, e.g., Plato or Sir Thomas More. That is also why earlier discussions of utopian fiction were usually written by critics trained in the social sciences rather than by critics trained in literature. To an appreciable degree this still tends to be the case today. Now, however, there is an additional difficulty, for the social scientists are critiquing utopias written by people who are primarily literary, for example, Krishan Kumar on Wells or Bernard Crick on Orwell. Inevitably much of importance--of literary importance--is simply disregarded, and so our understanding of modern utopia is correspondingly diminished. This book aims to put the fiction back into utopian fictions. While tracing the development of fiction in the writing of modern utopias, especially in Britain, it seeks to demonstrate in specific ways how those utopias have become increasingly literary--possibly as a reaction not only against the "social scientification" of modern utopias but also in reaction against the modern attempt to institute "utopia" in reality, notably in the former Soviet Union but also in consumerist, late-twentieth-century America. After an introductory discussion of how we understand--and how we should understand--modern utopian fictions, the book provides several examples of how those understandings affect our appreciation of utopian fiction. There are chapters on H. G. Wells's Time Machine; Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara; Aldous Huxley's Brave New World; George Orwell's Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four; William Golding's Lord of the Flies; and Iris Murdoch's The Bell. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peter Edgerly Firchow, internationally recognized scholar and author of numerous works including Reluctant Modernists, W. H. Auden: Contexts for Poetry, Envisioning Africa: Racism and Imperialism in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," and The End of Utopia, is professor of English at the University of Minnesota. "Firchow includes much that is praiseworthy in this short book on utopian fiction. . . . Firchow's work displays his very well informed explication and his ability, in most instances, to make literary texts come alive. His treatment of Wells's The Time Machine is simply outstanding. . . . I find his enthusiasm for his texts refreshing and his work on the end of history meticulous. Other scholars of utopian fiction will as well." -- H-Net Reviews "Utopian fiction has often been mangled in interpretation on the occasions when it has been read without a sense of irony, for the sake of political analysis, disregarding its artistic nature. To counterpoise such approaches, Firchow offers us a close reading of each of the chosen works, while also placing them in literary context," -- Janice Rossen, Partial Answers

Summary Of Patrick Wood S Technocracy Rising

BOOK EXCERPT:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The period between 1890 and 1930 was a pivotal time for the future of the world. All notions of Biblical inerrancy and historical accuracy had been discarded by the intellectual elite. Radical new inventions created by scientists and engineers were revolutionizing both the physical and social world. #2 The French philosopher Auguste Comte was the founder of Positivism, a philosophy that was very popular in the late 1800s. Positivism claimed that only scientific knowledge was authentic, and discarded all notions of absolute truth based on the Bible or metaphysical truth based on man’s imaginations. #3 Scientism takes Positivism to an extreme by claiming that science alone can produce truth about the world and reality. It rejects all philosophical, religious and metaphysical claims to understand reality since the truth it portends cannot be validated by the Scientific Method. #4 The philosophy of Darwinism grew out of Charles Darwin’s book The Origin of Species, which proposed that all life naturally evolved over long periods of time from the most simple creature to the most complex. It specifically rejected the Biblical account of creation and in general all thoughts of intelligent design.

Summary Of Paul Collier S The Future Of Capitalism

BOOK EXCERPT:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The divide between the well-educated and less-educated has become a new source of anxiety and anger in our societies. The less-educated, both in the metropolis and nationally, are in crisis, while the well-educated are forging themselves into a new ruling class. #2 The lack of a purposeful life is evident in the falling life expectancy of whites who have not been to college in America. The syndrome is also widespread and in the most broken cities, such as Blackpool, life expectancy is falling. #3 The last time capitalism derailed, in the 1930s, the same thing happened. The emerging dangers were crystallized by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World (1932) and George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). #4 There are three awful rifts that have opened in our societies, and they are not just problems that I study: they are the tragedies that have defined my life purpose. I want to change this situation.

Summary Of David Kushner S Masters Of Doom

BOOK EXCERPT:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Romero, who was 11 at the time, jumped onto his dirt bike and went to the local arcade. He knew he wasn’t supposed to be there, but he couldn’t help himself. That was where the games were. He tapped the control buttons as the rocks flew toward his triangular ship and the Jaws-style theme music blipped in suspense. #2 John Romero was born in 1967 in Arizona. His parents had married only a few months before, and his father had taken a job in the copper mines. The work was hard, and his father often came home drunk. But Romero loved going to the arcade with his stepfather. #3 Dungeons and Dragons, a pen-and-paper role-playing game, was the hottest thing going in 1972. It was like a computer-game version of the game, and it attracted many adults who lazily dismissed it as geeky escapism. But for a boy like Romero, it was much more than that. #4 The computer gaming industry was dominated by arcade machines and home consoles like the Atari 2600. But computer games were accessible, and the people who had the keys were not authoritarian monsters, but dudes.
