BOOK EXCERPT:
More than twenty years after Ernst Jünger's death in 1998, the controversial German writer's work continues to compel the attention of readers, critics, and scholars. In early 2019, Jünger's diaries, the Strahlungen, written while he was an officer in occupied Paris during World War II, were published in English to wide acclaim. These intimate accounts, of high literary and philosophical quality, reveal Jünger negotiating compliance with acts of subversion and resistance against the Nazi regime. His life is evidence that history can be both real and unrealistic at once, crystallising something essential about a twentieth century that witnessed the rise of total mobilisation, global war, and unprecedented technologies of mass extermination. This volume presents four new essays by established and emerging scholars on Jünger's work and legacy. Together, they provide biographical, philosophical, psychological, and aesthetic access-points to a major twentieth century German intellectual who, like few others, invites us to investigate the ambiguities, constraints, and imperatives of our own times.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Power of New Urban Tourism explores new forms of tourism in urban areas with their social, political, cultural, architectural and economic implications. By investigating various showcases of New Urban Tourism within its social and spatial frames, the book offers insights into power relations and connections between tourism and cityscapes in various socio-spatial settings around the world. Contributors to the volume show how urban space has become a battleground between local residents and visitors, with changing perceptions of tourists as co-users of public and private urban spaces and as influencers of the local economies. This includes different roles of digital platforms as resources for access to the city and touristic opportunities as well as ways to organise and express protest or shifting representations of urban space. With contemporary cases from a wide disciplinary spectrum, the contributors investigate the power of New Urban Tourism in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. This focus allows a cross-cultural evaluation of New Urban Tourism and its dynamic, and changing conception transforming and subverting cities and tourism alike. The Power of New Urban Tourism will be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of cultural studies, sociology, the political sciences, economics, history, human geography, urban design and planning, architecture, ethnology and anthropology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Concrete bridges are an important part of today's road infrastructure. An important part of those concrete bridges is to a large extent prefabricated. Precast concrete enables all the advantages of an industrialized process to be fully utilized. Contemporary concrete mixtures are used to realize high-strength bridge girders and piers that exactly meet the requirements set, both structurally and aesthetically, with a small ecological footprint. Sustainable and durable! On the construction site, there is no need for complex formwork, the execution time is drastically reduced and where road, water and rail traffic on or under the bridge has to be temporarily interrupted, it is only minimally inconvenienced during the execution of the project. Bridges capture the imagination. In addition to their pure functionality, overcoming a height difference, they offer designers unprecedented opportunities to shape their creativity, including when using precast concrete. This bulletin, prepared by the experts of Task Group 6.5 'Precast concrete bridges', takes a closer look at the conceptual (preliminary) design of prefabricated concrete bridges. The bulletin does not have the ambition to define the umbrella term 'conceptual design' but shows in a pragmatic way, using 24 examples spread all over the world, how leading designers use this methodology to select from the many possibilities to arrive at an ideal solution taking into account all design conditions. One often reads that experience is a necessary condition for good conceptual design. The pooled knowledge and experience in this bulletin already provide the reader with a good head start. Commission 6 thanks the former convener of the Task Group Hugo Corres, editor of this document, and the current co-conveners Marcello Waimberg and Ken-ichi Kata as well as all active members of the Task Group for sharing their knowledge and experience and for the successful realization of this bulletin.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"Hooke's Programme was revolutionary both cosmologically and mathematically. It presented 'the celestial motions", the proverbial symbol of stability and immutability, as a process of continuous change and prescribed only parameters of rectilinear motions and rectilinear attractions for calculating their closed curved orbits. Yet the traces of Hooke's construction of his Programme for the heavens lead through his investigations in such earthly disciplines as microscopy, practical optics and horology, and the mathematical tools developed by Newton to accomplish it appear no less local and goal-oriented than Hooke's lenses and springs.".

BOOK EXCERPT:
Volume II in The Making of Economics, 4th Edition series fills a major gap in the literature of economics, providing in brief fashion a complete treatment of high theory in economics. Like Volume I, the book is accessible to the intelligent reader, be they advanced undergraduate or graduate students, laypeople, or professors of economics and finance. The author walks the reader through the maze of contemporary economics, acquainting them with the most up-to-date theories as well as recent economic history. The learning tasks are eased by volleys of examples as well as dramatic illustrations. The progression is from neoclassical Keynesian economics to monetarism, continuing with mathematical economics and econometrics, the theory of economic growth, the new classical economics, game theory, experimental economics, and global economics. For example, common threads between Smithian classical economics and new classical economics are woven into the fabric of discussions directing the way to the higher theory. The new chapters on mathematics and econometrics, game theory, experimental economics, and globalization are not to be found in other surveys of what the author calls the ';Modern Superstructure of Economics.'; Although designed to be used with Volume I, it can also stand alone as a text or textbook supplement for a wide range of courses in economics and finance. This book is also available as a .

BOOK EXCERPT:
An accessible introduction to the ideas of Isaiah Berlin, this work argues that Berlin's critique of the modern enemies of liberty is exciting and powerful, but also that the coherence of his thought is threatened by a tension between its liberal and pluralist elements.
