BOOK EXCERPT:

This revised and updated third edition, previously titled The Effective Teacher's Guide to Dyslexia and Other Learning Difficulties (Learning Disabilities), unravels the complexity of specific learning difficulties in an accessible and user-friendly way. Each chapter provides key information about the disorder in question, giving a clear definition before discussing prevalence, causal factors, identification, and assessment and provision. Implications for the curriculum and related assessment, pedagogy, resources, therapy/care, and school and classroom organisation are explained, allowing providers to reflect and adapt their practice in response to the needs of the individual. The book informs effective provision, with the aim of encouraging the best achievement and personal and social development for children and young people. The book authoritatively and lucidly addresses issues associated with • impairment in reading/dyslexia, • impairment in written expression/dysgraphia, • impairment in mathematics/dyscalculia, and • developmental co-ordination disorder/dyspraxia. Recognising the importance and the challenge of multi-professional working, the book relates provision to the roles of parents and carers alongside that of the practitioner. Underpinned by research and widely held professional judgement, this will prove a practical, readable, and inspiring resource for professionals in the UK, US, and elsewhere including teachers, therapists, psychologists, and students entering these professions.

Guide To Dyspraxia And Developmental Coordination Disorders

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Built upon the good practice for which the Dyscovery Centre has become so well known, this book takes a broader view of the difficulties that those with additional needs face. It considers whether this is a health, educational or social difficulty and what the wider implications are for the individual and how they manage at home and in the community. The authors look at what happens, what can be done to help and what changes occur as the child becomes an adolescent and eventually an adult. Teachers, SENCOs, teaching assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and parents of children with dyspraxia or developmental co-ordination disorders should find this book stimulates their thinking and helps them in their work.

Current Perspectives On Developmental Coordination Disorder Dcd Volume Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is detected in approximately 5% of children and describes a condition in which motor coordination is below the level expected given a child’s age or opportunity for learning. Children with DCD display fine and/or gross motor difficulties which persist into adulthood and cannot be better explained by a medical or neurological condition. The difficulties that individuals with DCD experience have a significant impact on activities of daily living, scholastic achievement, inter-personal relationships, and employment. Motor difficulties such as these have been poorly defined and are poorly understood by healthcare and education professionals, rendering treatments and care more difficult. European guidelines from 2012 and further revisions in 2019, have helped to clarify the diagnostic issues and there has been a significant growth in research in this field over the last four decades. A search for the topic ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder’ using Web of Science yielded 4153 publications with 69% of these published in the last 10 years alone. Despite this growth there still are pending questions in research regarding our understanding of the etiology, the co-occurrence with other developmental disorders, and the lived experience.

Written Expression Disorders

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A critical review of the literature on written expression disorders of individuals with learning disabilities. The purpose of the book is to shed light on issues concerning definition, assessment and interaction for individuals with writing disorders. The integrated model of written expression offered draws on the work of cognitive psychology, neurolinguistics and sociolinguistics. The model illustrates the interrelationship between cognitive and affective processing networks that influence the selection and use of linguistics and information structures in producing a written text. Particularly noteworthy aspects of this book are: the emphasis on the role of writing in developing higher mental functions (other texts on writing disorders have placed greater emphasis on lower-order aspects); not only the addition and integration of the sociolinguistic dimension into the model of writing but also the inclusion of guidelines for assessing this dimension; specification of needed research in which both populations and tasks have been carefully defined; and, finally, notice of the importance of a continuum for defining, assessing and treating each component of written expression. This state-of-the-art work on disorders of writing is of interest to both researchers and clinicians concerned with written expression disorders in children and/or adults.

Collaboration And System Coordination For Students With Special Needs

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the power and promise of collaboration and system coordination -- connecting students, professionals, parents, schools and community agencies in new ways. Placing students with special needs and families in the center, collaboration and system coordination are viewed from a developmental framework from early childhood through post-high school. The book perspective helps individuals understand the complex interplay between the needs of students and collaborative skill needs of professionals along the developmental path. Key topics: How school collaboration and system coordination work, current laws that promote it with emphasis on IDEA 2004 and NCLB 2001, research that links collaboration with student and family outcomes, skills for effective collaboration between general and special educators, the role of families in school collaboration, effects of cultural and linguistic diversity, and strategies for effective collaboration and coordination from early childhood through post-secondary education, including alternative educational settings. Case examples are threaded throughout as the book urges change in how professionals think about the way education and human services agencies should respond to students who are special learners.
