System Reliability And Security

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Because of the growing reliance on software, concerns are growing as to how reliable a system is before it is commissioned for use, how high the level of reliability is in the system, and how many vulnerabilities exist in the system before its operationalization. Equally pressing issues include how to secure the system from internal and external security threats that may exist in the face of resident vulnerabilities. These two problems are considered increasingly important because they necessitate the development of tools and techniques capable of analyzing dependability and security aspects of a system. These concerns become more pronounced in the cases of safety-critical and mission-critical systems. System Reliability and Security: Techniques and Methodologies focuses on the use of soft computing techniques and analytical techniques in the modeling and analysis of dependable and secure systems. It examines systems and applications having complex distributed or networked architectures in such fields as: Nuclear energy Ground transportation systems Air traffic control Healthcare and medicine Communications System reliability engineering is a multidisciplinary field that uses computational methods for estimating or predicting the reliability aspects of a system and analyzing failure data obtained from real-world projects. System security is a related field that ensures that even a reliable system is secure against accidental or deliberate intrusions and is free of vulnerabilities. This book covers tools and techniques, cutting-edge research topics, and methodologies in the areas of system reliability and security. It examines prediction models and methods as well as how to secure a system as it is being developed.

Computer Safety Reliability And Security

BOOK EXCERPT:

Computers and microprocessors are indispensable in modern technical systems, their deployment spanning the domains automotive, railway, aerospace, and transportation, security, energy supply, telecommunication, critical infrastructures and process ind- tries. They perform tasks that a few decades ago were very difficult if not impossible. As they perform these tasks with increasing efficiency, more and more tasks are shifted from hardware to software, which means that the dependability of computer systems becomes crucial for the safety, security and reliability of technical systems. With the so-called “embedded systems” (becoming more and more intelligent, networked and co-operating with each other, with humans and the environment) computers have invaded all aspects of daily life. New paradigms have arisen, like ubiquitous computing, systems-of-systems, energy and resource awareness, enormous complexity issues and the like, requiring a more holistic systems view as well. th So, after 31 years of SAFECOMP, the emphasis of the 29 event is on critical - bedded systems, which are almost omnipresent. Their impact on our lives, risks and challenges are often not well understood (underestimated or exaggerated). The p- mary issue is to cope with complexity, new failure modes and resource management, due to shrinking feature size, multi-core systems and management of multiple variants, while maintaining dependability properties and robustness.

Computer Safety Reliability And Security

BOOK EXCERPT:

Computers and their interactions are becoming the characteristic features of our time: Many people believe that the industrial age is going over into the information age. In the same way as life of the beginning of this century was dominated by machines, factories, streets and railways, the starting century will be characterised by computers and their networks. This change naturally affects also the institutions and the installations our lives depend upon: power plants, including nuclear ones, chemical plants, mechanically working factories, cars, railways and medical equipment; they all depend on computers and their connections. In some cases it is not human life that may be endangered by computer failure, but large investments; e. g. if a whole plant interrupts its production for a long time. In addition to loss of life and property one must not neglect public opinion, which is very critical in many countries against major technical defects. The related computer technology, its hardware, software and production process differ between standard applications and safety related ones: In the safety case it is normally not only the manufacturers and the customers that are involved, but a third party, usually an assessor, who is taking care of the public interest on behalf of a state authority. Usually safety engineers are in a better position than their colleagues from the conventional side, as they may spend more time and money on a particular task and use better equipment.

Building Secure And Reliable Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Can a system be considered truly reliable if it isn't fundamentally secure? Or can it be considered secure if it's unreliable? Security is crucial to the design and operation of scalable systems in production, as it plays an important part in product quality, performance, and availability. In this book, experts from Google share best practices to help your organization design scalable and reliable systems that are fundamentally secure. Two previous O’Reilly books from Google—Site Reliability Engineering and The Site Reliability Workbook—demonstrated how and why a commitment to the entire service lifecycle enables organizations to successfully build, deploy, monitor, and maintain software systems. In this latest guide, the authors offer insights into system design, implementation, and maintenance from practitioners who specialize in security and reliability. They also discuss how building and adopting their recommended best practices requires a culture that’s supportive of such change. You’ll learn about secure and reliable systems through: Design strategies Recommendations for coding, testing, and debugging practices Strategies to prepare for, respond to, and recover from incidents Cultural best practices that help teams across your organization collaborate effectively
