Mitochondria from mammalian tissues possess an elaborate system for 2+ 2+ transporting Ca across their inner membrane which consists of Ca import, 2+ via the Ca uniporter, in response to the mitochondrial membrane 2+ + potential ?? and of Ca release by an antiport system in exchange for H + 9,23 or Na (see Fig. l) . Because the uniporter is dependent upon the external 2+ 2+ 2+ 2+ Ca concentration ([Ca ]), mitochondria accumulate Ca until the [Ca ] o o 2+ decreases to the level at which the uniporter activity balances the Ca efflux. 2+ The [Ca ] at which the uniporter and efflux activities are equal is defined o the “setpoint” andcorresponds to values between 0.3-3μM. 2+ Figure 1. The Springer Handbook of Enzymes provides concise data on some 5,000 enzymes sufficiently well characterized – and here is the second, updated edition. Their application in analytical, synthetic and biotechnology processes as well as in food industry, and for medicinal treatments is added. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. The new edition reflects considerable progress in enzymology: the total material has more than doubled, and the complete 2nd edition consists of 39 volumes plus Synonym Index. Starting in 2009, all newly classified enzymes are treated in Supplement Volumes.

This book presents the papers that were delivered at the Satellite Symposium of the International Society for Neurochemistry in Padua, September, 1975. Having such Satellite Symposia was a new experiment for the Society, and all signs, including those from Padua, indicate that it was a very successful experiment, which will be an old tradition for the Society. The large international meeting affords the opportunity for presentations from all areas, for meeting of colleagues from various backgrounds and disciplines. The Satellite Symposia allow people from the same area of interest to discuss their subject in depth, and as such represent meetings of possibly the greatest practical significance for the partici pants. The Padua Symposium was no exception: all who particiDated in it could testify to its success in exchanging of information, learning of new approaches, and acqu~r~ng of new ideas, also the strengthening of old friendships, forming of new friendships and new collaborations, and exposing ideas to criticisms, suggestions, discussions. As a sign of the interest and success of the partici pants I can mention that all participants have sent in their contributions. Perhaps editors of volumes would anpreciate that the very last came in no later than two months past the deadline.

Biological membranes have been under intensive investigation for several decades. Despite very great experimental challenges, membranes are at last beginning to reveal their secrets. In this book, leading investigators of membrane structure and function report on progress in three related fields: specialization of membrane regions, asymmetry in transport properties, and differentiation of cell faces in epithelia. "Specialization at the Molecular Level" is the subject of the first section; in it, the authors consider such problems as the biogenesis of membranes, the geometry of protein-lipid relationships, and the physical properties of membrane receptor-sites. In the second section, "Asymmetry in Transport," such topics as the sodium-potassium pump, proton translocation, and anion transport are covered. The last section is entitled "Polar Faces in Epithelia" and deals with the complex properties of ion transport across the complex membrane environment maintained by surfaces such as the renal tubular epithelia.
