Examining the teacher education landscape in China, Xiaojing Yan focuses on how early career teachers (ECTs) build their competence during the initial years of teaching, challenges that come with teacher training and pathways to improve teacher competence. Although there is a growing trend in China to focus on teacher quality and professional development, teacher competence varies across teacher groups: ECTs, in particular, face a variety of challenges in the initial period. Using a qualitative-based approach, Yan examines 55 teacher education policies and 3 education laws between 1949 and 2019 in China. The chapters offer valuable insights into teacher education policy and practice, as well as teachers' professional development strategies and competence growth at the secondary level. With teacher’s needs in mind, this book provides a framework for policy development and teaching implementation, as well as for teachers' practices and effective professional learning. Focusing on the competence of teachers that underpins inclusive education seeking equal access to education for special needs children, this title examines teacher competence cultivation based on examples in China and excellent international experience. To give a clear picture of the context of inclusive education in China, the author first clarifies the relevant concepts and reviews the evolving policies and practices embodied in the “Learning in Regular Classrooms (LRC)” program. The study then constructs an analytical model of four key indicators that help evaluate the competence of teachers in inclusive education. Based on analysis of the influencing factors of teacher competence, the book elucidates how these factors work to determine teacher competence. ICHSS is an international seminar that is held every two years organized by the Research and Community Service Institute of the State University of Malang. Employing a mixed-method approach, the book investigates the psychology of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in the online teaching environment in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. World Teacher’s Day is an annual celebration of teachers around the globe. Since 1994, October 5th has commemorated the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set benchmarks for the rights and responsibilities of teachers as well as their preparation, recruitment, working conditions, and continued professional learning. In 1997, the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted to complement the 1966 Recommendation. The 2021 celebration of World Teachers’ Day is co-convened by UNESCO in partnership with Education International (EI), the International Labor Organization (ILO), and UNICEF.
