This book is the first ever collection about twenty-first century genre fiction. It offers accessible yet rigorous critical interventions in a growing field of popular culture and academic study, presenting new genres as a fascinating and powerful means of reading contemporary culture. The collection explores the history and uses of genre to date, analyses key examples of innovations and developments in the field and reflects on how these texts have been mobilised in teaching since the year 2000. It explores a range of new twenty-first century genres through a close reading of key examples, along with a broader critical overview at the beginning of each chapter capturing wider developments, contexts and themes. As a result of this contextual, text-orientated approach, the book promotes a broad appeal beyond the specifics of new genres and authors, and will contribute to a wider understanding of developments in post-millennial fictions.

The canon, as much an ideology as it is a body of texts perceived to be intrinsic to the high school English classroom, has come under scrutiny for maintaining status quo narratives about whiteness, masculinity, heterosexuality, ability, and even those associated with American ideals of self-reliance, the good life, and the self-made man. Teaching practices around these texts may also reinforce harmful practices and ways of thinking, including those connected to notions of culture, literary merit, and methods of reading, teaching, and learning. Teaching the Canon in 21st Century Classrooms offers innovative, critical ways of reading, thinking about, and teaching canonical texts in 21st century classrooms. Responding to the increasingly pluralized, digitized, global 21st century English classroom, chapter authors make explicit the ideologies of a canonical text of focus, while also elaborating a pedagogical approach that de-centers the canon, bridges past and present, applies critical theory, and celebrates the rich identities of 21st century readers. Teaching and learning in the 21st century have new implications for English language education since the core focus of learning in the 21st century involves collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication. Re-orientation of current curriculum, syllabus and content in English language education may be required and this could be attained by creating fundamental understanding of the concepts in relation to the main skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), as well as other elements such as professional development of teachers, assessment and technology integration. This book aims to provide and facilitate such understanding to researchers, teachers, students and parents in deliberating, examining and resolving the main issues that beleaguer and challenge everyone and anyone involved in the teaching and learning in the 21st century. This volume draws together various researches, theoretical understandings, ideas and practices that reflect the above.

Among the issues facing teachers as the 21st century approaches are: the prevalence of violence, growing racial and socioeconomic divisions in society, and lack of parental involvement. Activities gathered from articles in educational journals are suggested to help children voice their experiences, thoughts, and concerns about violence. Some of these activities are: inviting a police representative to visit the classroom, having children become aware of violence on a favorite television program and then rewriting the show without violence, and helping children feel safe by assisting them in writing the names of people and places to which they can go when feeling scared. Teachers must be aware of not passing on cultural stereotypes; while elementary school children are not able to conceptualize socioeconomic differences in terms of profession and status, in the current consumer-oriented world, the advantages of wealth and disadvantages of poverty soon become evident to them. Also, teachers should learn as much as possible about the dynamics of their communities and recognize the messages that children are absorbing in their daily experience. Suggestions for promoting parental involvement include recruiting a volunteer to become a liaison between teacher and parents, showing respect for parents by treating them as co-workers rather than as free help, asking for parents' input, and thanking them for their participation. Music is an expression of feelings of the soul conveyed through the medium of sound. But not all sounds are music. It might be said that only an organised sound or series of sounds can be called music. It can also be said that musical order is comparable to the natural order of the universe. There are laws of a certain nature in the natural sciences and likewise in music there are structures and procedures, or even rules, that should be followed to produce beautiful music.
