Valour And The Horror Revisited

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In January 1992 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) broadcast The Valour and the Horror, a three-part television series on Canada's role in World War II. It sparked a major controversy among viewers, war veterans, and historians. Brian and Terence McKenna, the authors-producers of the series, were accused of distorting historical facts, maligning individuals such as commanders Arthur Harris and Guy Simonds, presenting a biased account of events, and overstepping the line between journalism and drama. The Valour and the Horror Revisited brings together source documents, original essays, and commentaries to provide an analysis of the specific accusations and of larger questions concerning responsible journalism. Included in the collection are reports by David Bercuson and S.F. Wise, who were asked by the CBC ombudsman to assess the series; the CBC ombudsman's report; the McKennas' response to the ombudsman's report; the ombudsman's commentary on the McKennas' response; and three new essays by historians John Ferris, William McAndrew, and Scot Robertson on the incidents covered in the series - Canadian involvement in the battles in Hong Kong and Normandy, and the bombing of Germany. The Valour and the Horror Revisited addresses such important issues as the dangers of "docudrama," the calibre of the Canadian media, the meaning of the Canadian experience in the war, and the nature of history.

The Interception Of Vessels On The High Seas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The principal aim of this book is to address the international legal questions arising from the 'right of visit on the high seas' in the twenty-first century. This right is considered the most significant exception to the fundamental principle of the freedom of the high seas (the freedom, in peacetime, to remain free of interference by ships of another flag). It is this freedom that has been challenged by a recent significant increase in interceptions to counter the threats of international terrorism and WMD proliferation, or to suppress transnational organised crime at sea, particularly the trafficking of narcotics and smuggling of migrants. The author questions whether the principle of non-interference has been so significantly curtailed as to have lost its relevance in the contemporary legal order of the oceans. The book begins with an historical and theoretical examination of the framework underlying interception. This historical survey informs the remainder of the work, which then looks at the legal framework of the right of visit, contemporary challenges to the traditional right, interference on the high seas for the maintenance of international peace and security, interferences to maintain the 'bon usage' of the oceans (navigation and fishing), piracy j'ure gentium'and current counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia, the problems posed by illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, interdiction operations to counter drug and people trafficking, and recent interception operations in the Mediterranean Sea organised by FRONTEX.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume brings together leading researchers to celebrate the significant contributions of Peter Grabosky to the field of Criminology, and in particular his work developing and adapting regulatory theory to the study of policing and security. This collection of essays showcases Grabosky’s pioneering treatment of key regulatory concepts as they relate to such interactions, and illustrate how his work has been instrumental in shaping contemporary scholarship and practice around the governance of security. Revisiting the work of a key figure in the field, this book will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists, socio-legal studies and those engaged with security and policy studies.

Armageddon Revisited

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Amos Wilder, a distinguished New Testament scholar and poet, was only a youth when he volunteered to serve as an ambulance driver with the American Field Service during World War I and then became a corporal in the Army's 17th Field Artillery of the 2nd Division. His journals and letters home (including correspondence with his younger brother, Thornton Wilder) form the basis of this book of reminiscences about his experiences, one of the few wartime memoirs that eloquently articulates and interprets the common soldier's point of view. As an ambulance driver, Wilder traveled from the western front to the mountains of Macedonia, where his memoir sheds light on the many nations, races, and religions involved in the conflict in that turbulent region. After the United States entered the war, Wilder, now the soldier, participated in the decisive 1918 actions at Belleau Wood, Soissons, and the closing Argonne drive. His journals provide a brilliant panorama of the activities and people behind the lines, an often arresting portrayal very different from the scenes of death in the trenches that others have described. Throughout, Wilder explores in a fresh and provocative way larger questions about the enduring meaning of a shattering event in world history remembered by himself and others as an encounter with "Armageddon."
