The Academic Trumpists

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

There has been an outpouring of research on populist conservatism since the advent of the Trump presidency and extreme right movements in Europe. Much less studied, however, is the growing political conservatism in the American academy and how it relates to populist sentiment. The Academic Trumpists addresses a gap in the research literature by looking at the impact of Trumpism on conservative faculty. It compares 109 professors who publicly support Trump to 89 conservative professors who oppose Trump. All 198 function as public intellectuals who advocated publicly their views. Drawing on recent research in the sociology of intellectuals and Pierre Bourdieu’s analytical field perspective, this book offers a fielding political identities and practices framework to show how these two groups of professors (Trumpists and anti-Trumpists) differ in where they teach, their intellectual orientations, their scholarly productivity, their political rationales, where they network with think tanks, scholarly professional associations, and government agencies, and their stances on key controversies surrounding the Trump presidency (Covid-19, the two impeachments, the November 2020 election lost, and the January 6 mob assault on the United States Capitol). The academic Trumpists embrace the right-wing populist wave mobilized by Trump and the conservative critics resist this move. This polarization of views between these two groups of conservative professors is enduring and rooted in two distinct social networks that connect their positions in the academic field to affiliations with conservative think tanks that reinforce their respective political identities and radical right-wing anti-establishment thinking in America more generally. This book will appeal to readers interested in the politics of higher education, the sociology of intellectuals, political sociology, and research on conservative and right-wing populism politics in America today.

At The Margins Of Academia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Are displaced and emigrated academics “at risk” or “in reserve”? Are political oppression of dissident scholars and economic precarization of academic workforce separate phenomena, or two sides of the same coin? Can the pervasive precariousness in its various forms foster a conversation on shared sensibilities? And, can traumatic experiences like exile and loss eventually lead to a revival of agency? Based on the author’s own experiences and on in-depth interviews with the exiled Peace Academics, At the Margins of Academia offers a broad approach to the challenge of academic labor precarity and the growing academic migration from Turkey to European academic labor markets. It provides a detailed analysis of the systemic background of precariousness and the socio-emotional expressions of being kept in reserve, in conjunction with the antinomies of exile.

The Maga Manifesto

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A “Manifesto” is a public declaration of policy, values, or goals. It clearly spells out intentions or motives, making the case for change. The MAGA Manifesto is a public declaration of Donald Trump’s goals, values, and intentions as defined by his campaign rallies, and political actions before, during, and since his term as President. Manifesto is neither a positive nor negative term. Its policies, values, or goals determine its worth. Hitler’s Mein Kampf is an example of a manifesto that most historians have judged as evil. A historical evaluation of the MAGA Manifesto is still evolving.

On Public Imagination

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this wide-ranging and multidisciplinary volume, leading scholars, activists, journalists, and public figures deliberate about the creative and critical potential of public imagination in an era paradoxically marked by intensifying globalization and resurgent nationalism. Divided into five sections, these essays explore the social, political, and cultural role of imagination and civic engagement, offering cogent, ingenious reflections that stand in stark contrast to the often grim rhetoric of our era. Short and succinct, the essays engage with an interconnected ensemble of themes and issues while also providing insights into the specific geographical and social dynamics of each author’s national or regional context. Part 1 introduces the reader to theoretical reflections on imagination and the public sphere; Part 2 illustrates dynamics of public imagination in a diverse set of cultural contexts; Part 3 reflects in various ways on the urgent need for a radically transformed public and civic imagination in the face of worldwide ecological crisis; Part 4 suggests new societal possibilities that are related to spiritual as well as politically revolutionary sources of inspiration; Part 5 explores characteristics of present and potentially emerging global society and the existing transnational framework that could provide resources for a more humane global order. Erudite and thought-provoking, On Public Imagination makes a vital contribution to political thought, and is accessible to activists, students, and scholars alike. Funny Short Stories By The Snotty Atheist

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is about Man's pointless quest for truth, his goal to establish footing in the hereafter - for eternity. This book is about Man's right to dominate and exploit the lower animals and my firm belief that as I speak, there are dozens of carnivorous intelligent species perfectly willing to place Man on the menu - a privilege bestowed to them by their omnipotent, omniscient god and contained within the text of their god-inspired dogma, On this day, we will be granted an epiphany - that a monotheist served over rice will provide a well balanced diet of protein, B vitamins and riboflavin. From that point on - Galileo, Issac Newton, Aristotle and Frederick Nietzsche will be sustenance and everything that Man has created over the past two thousand years will be marginalized by the simple fact that we are delicious.

Education For Liberal Democracy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"The book argues that the proper aim of civic education in schools is to shore up liberal democracy; shows how discussion can be the main dish, not a side dish, of classroom instruction; shows how classroom discussion develops voice, defined as the freedom to make and express un-coerced decisions, and disciplinary knowledge, defined as the knowledge that results from a public process of error-seeking, contestation, and validation; argues that students need to learn both disciplinary knowledge and voice if they are to take their place on the public stage and hold the 'office of citizen' in a liberal democracy; and finally, treats subject-centered and student-centered instruction as partners, not opponents"--
