This Volume contains papers presented at a symposium organized by the Center for Austrian Studies and held at the University of Minnesota in May 1989. Scholars from Austria, England, Canada, and the United States, specializing in Austrian history, music, art, and literature met to discuss a number of common topics and themes form a variety of perspectives relating to Austria in the age of the French Revolution. The symposium was remarkable for the congeniality of the participants and the easy and fruitful way in which they exchanged ideas and blended their approaches ind insights. The development of Austrian diplomacy, warfare, society, and culture in the period, and the impact of the French Enlightenment and Revolution on Austrian art, literature, music, drama, and journalism are explored in the essays that appear in this study.

This book grew from a simple question. Why did French audiences become silent? Eighteenth-century travelers' accounts of the Paris Opera and memoirs of concertgoers describe a busy, preoccupied public, at times loud and at others merely sociable, but seldom deeply attentive.

Beethoven and Rossini have always been more than a pair of famous composers. Even during their lifetimes, they were well on the way to becoming 'Beethoven and Rossini' – a symbolic duo, who represented a contrast fundamental to Western music. This contrast was to shape the composition, performance, reception and historiography of music throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Invention of Beethoven and Rossini puts leading scholars of opera and instrumental music into dialogue with each other, with the aim of unpicking the origins, consequences and fallacies of the opposition between the two composers and what they came to represent. When we speak of "classical music" it often refers rather loosely to serious "art" music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take.
