BOOK EXCERPT:
Here Gananath Obeyesekere debunks one of the most enduring myths of imperialism, civilization, and conquest: the notion that the Western civilizer is a god to savages. Using shipboard journals and logs kept by Captain James Cook and his officers, Obeyesekere reveals the captain as both the self-conscious civilizer and as the person who, his mission gone awry, becomes a "savage" himself. In this new edition of The Apotheosis of Captain Cook, the author addresses, in a lengthy afterword, Marshall Sahlins's 1994 book, How "Natives" Think, which was a direct response to this work.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Maritime historian and researcher James K. Barnett transcribed two extraordinary, little-known journals from Captain James Cook’s third exploratory voyage. They offer remarkable eyewitness accounts at the time of initial European contact, the first reasonably accurate maps of North America’s west coast, the earliest comprehensive report from the Bering Sea ice pack, and the dramatic story of Cook’s death at Kealakekua Bay. Astonishing for accounts of landings along Hawai'i, Vancouver Island, and Alaska, both chronicles languished in Australian archives for over a century. Barnett adds context and commentary to complete the story. Commissioned by the British Admiralty, Cook set sail in July 1776 to confirm the outline of North America’s Pacific coastline and search for the elusive Northwest Passage. The expedition’s sailing ships, the Resolution and the Discovery, traveled to the South Seas, then chanced upon the Hawaiian Islands before reaching the Oregon coastline and the Arctic. Cook chose to winter in the Hawaiian archipelago, where he died in a skirmish. His crews made a second attempt to find the coveted route, then returned to England after more than four years at sea. James Burney was first lieutenant on the Discovery. Active in shore parties and chart preparation, he saw Cook’s death from the ship’s deck. One of the few accounts from the consort vessel, his writing provides new details and important, thoughtful impressions of North and South Pacific people and places. Working under the notorious William Bligh, Henry Roberts was Master's Mate on the Resolution, performing essential hydrographic and cartographic tasks. He was a few feet away when Cook was killed. His well-illustrated logbook includes coordinates, tables of routes, and records of weather at sea, but also lively accounts of shore excursions. Illustrations include maps and drawings, as well as images by the expedition’s official artist, John Webber.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"For 2,500 years, since the time of Herodotus and Thucydides, historians have sought to record the truth about the past. Today, however, the discipline is suffering a potentially lethal attach from the rise to prominence of an array of French-inspired literary and social theories, each of which denies that truth and knowledge about the past are possible. These theories claim the central point on which history was founded no longer holds: there is no fundamental distinction between history and myth or between history and fiction." "Historians in classrooms from Berkeley to Paris have embraced these views, and an increasing number of literary critics and social theorists now feel free to define their own work as history and to call themselves historians. The result is revolutionary: historians have not only changed how history is taught, they are also increasingly obscuring the very facts on which the truth must be built. In The Killing of History, Keith Windschuttle offers both a devastating expose of the absurdity of these developments and a defense of the integrity of Western intellectual traditions which are now so widely attacked." "Windschuttle examines exactly what is being taught about Columbus' discovery of the New World; the history of asylums and prisons in Europe; the fall of Communism in 1989; and the Battle of Quebec in 1759. He offers a much needed defense of traditional history as a properly scientific endeavor and argues that the great works of history should still be regarded as among the finest forms of Western literature."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. BOOK EXCERPT:
"Captain Cook's enduring claim to fame is that in three extraordinary voyages to the Pacific he redrew the map of the world. The news that reached London in 1780 of his death on a beach in Hawai'i the previous year was shocking, and the details of that bloody and chaotic fracas had to be turned into something nobler as befitted a martyr-hero." "This new interpretation of Cook's life and death argues that the circumstances and reporting of his death are the key to his reputation. For many years this seaman of humble origins enjoyed unparalleled status as 'the pride of his century', and in the white settlement colonies in the Pacific he became 'father of the nation'. By contrast, first in Hawai'i and then in the postcolonial world, a different view emerged of a destructive invader, more anti-hero than hero. Captain Cook's progress from obscurity to fame and then, for some, to infamy, is a story that has never been fully told."--BOOK JACKET.
