The Application Of Mathematical Statistics To Chemical Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Application of Mathematical Statistics to Chemical Analysis presents the methods of mathematical statistics as applied to problems connected with chemical analysis. This book is divided into nine chapters that particularly consider the principal theorems of mathematical statistics that are explained with examples taken from researchers associated with chemical analysis in laboratory work. This text deals first with the problems of mathematical statistics as a means to summarize information in chemical analysis. The next chapters examine the classification of errors, random variables and their characteristics, and the normal distribution in mathematical statistics. These topics are followed by surveys of the application of Poisson's and binomial distribution in radiochemical analysis; the estimation of chemical analytic results; and the principles and application of determination of experimental variance. The last chapters explore the determination of statistical parameters of linear relations and some working methods associated with the statistical design of an experiment. This book will be of great value to analytical chemists and mathematical statisticians.

Instrumental Multi Element Chemical Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The analysis of materials containing several elements used to be a difficult problem for analytical chemists, so a well established sequence of wet chemical qualitative tests were performed to ensure each element was detected. Quantitative tests could then be carried out on the sample, according to the range of elements present. Most analytical chemists were very familiar with these techniques, having been taugth them from a very early stage in their education and careers. The analytical chemist can now call on a range of specialist instrumental techniques which can detect the presence of many elements, often simultaneously, and often quantitatively, providing rapid results on samples which, in the past, could take days. The drawback is that the instruments tend to be expensive, suited to particular sample types or matrices and complex in both setting up and in the interpretation of results. Furthermore the general analytical chemist may have access and familiarity with only one or two methods. Written by an international team of contributors, each experts in their particular fields, this book familiarizes analytical chemists with the range of elemental analysis techniquers, to enable them to specify the most appropriate test for any given sample. In addition, it contains important chapters on sample preparation and quality control, essential elements in obtaining accurate and reliable analytical results. As such, this book will be essential reading for all analytical chemists. The techniques of elemental analysis are important in many other disciplines, so the book will be of particular interest to those commissioning a wide range of analytical measurements, such as chemists, geologists, environmental scientists and biologists. The breadth and depth of coverage will also make the book very useful for advanced students.

BOOK EXCERPT:

A description of the use of computer aided modeling and simulation in the development, integration and optimization of industrial processes. The two authors elucidate the entire procedure step-by-step, from basic mathematical modeling to result interpretation and full-scale process performance analysis. They further demonstrate similitude comparisons of experimental results from different systems as a tool for broadening the applicability of the calculation methods. Throughout, the book adopts a very practical approach, addressing actual problems and projects likely to be encountered by the reader, as well as fundamentals and solution strategies for complex problems. It is thus equally useful for student and professional engineers and chemists involved in industrial process and production plant design, construction or upgrading.

Trace Element Analysis In Biological Specimens

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The major theme of this book is analytical approaches to trace metal and speciation analysis in biological specimens. The emphasis is on the reliable determination of a number of toxicologically and environmentally important metals. It is essentially a handbook based on the practical experience of each individual author. The scope ranges from sampling and sample preparation to the application of various modern and well-documented methods, including quality assessment and control and statistical treatment of data. Practical advice on avoiding sample contamination is included. In the first part, the reader is offered an introduction into the basic principles and methods, starting with sampling, sample storage and sample treatment, with the emphasis on sample decomposition. This is followed by a description of the potential of atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic emission spectrometry, voltammetry, neutron activation analysis, isotope dilution analysis, and the possibilities for metal speciation in biological specimens. Quality control and all approaches to achieve reliable data are treated in chapters about interlaboratory and intralaboratory surveys and reference methods, reference materials and statistics and data evaluation. The chapters of the second part provide detailed information on the analysis of thirteen trace metals in the most important biological specimens. The following metals are treated in great detail: Aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, selenium, manganese, nickel, mercury, thallium, vanadium and zinc. The book will serve as a valuable aid for practical analysis in biomedical laboratories and for researchers involved with trace metal and species analysis in clinical, biochemical and environmental research.

Chemometrics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

At a time when computerized laboratory automation is producing a da ta explosion, chemists are turning to applied mathematics and statistics for the tools to extract useful chemical information from data. This rush to find applicable methods has lead to a somewhat confusing body of literature that represents a barrier to chemists wishing to learn more about chemometrics. The confusion results partly from the mixing of chemical notation and nomenclature with those of statistics, applied mathematics and engineering. Additionally, in the absence of collaboration with mathematicians, chemists have, at times, misused data analysis methodology and even reinvented methods that have seen years of service in other fields. The Chemometrics Society has worked hard to solve this problem since it was founded in 1974 with the goal of improving communications between the chemical sciences and applied mathe matics and statistics. The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Chemometrics is evidence of this fact as it was initiated in response to a call from its membership for advanced training in several areas of chemometrics. This Institute focused on current theory and application in the new field of Chemometrics: Use of mathematical and statistical methods, Ca) to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments; and Cb) to provide maximum chemical information by analyzing chemical data. The Institute had two formal themes and two informal themes.
