This publication reports the proceedings of a one-day seminar on The AppZicatian af Mathematics in Industry held at the Australian National University on Wednesday, December 3, 1980. It was organized jointly by the Division of Mathematics and Statistics, CSIRO, and the Departments of Pure and Applied Mathematics, The Faculty of Science, Australian National University. A paper based on the talk "Some uses of statistically designed experiments in industrial problems" given by N.B. Carter at the Seminar was not received by the editors. Though R.M. Lewis of John Lysaght (Australia) Limited did not present a talk, the editors invited him to submit a paper. They only learnt about his work after the program for the seminar had been finalized and publicized. His paper appears as the last paper in these proceedings and is entitled "A simple model for coil interior temperature prediction during batch annealing". The seminar was opened by Dr J.R. Philip, FAA, FRS, Director of the Physical Sciences Institute, CSIRO. He kindly agreed to supply an edited version of his comments for inclusion in the proceedings. Industrial Mathematics is a relatively recent discipline. It is concerned primarily with transforming technical, organizational and economic problems posed by indus try into mathematical problems; "solving" these problems byapproximative methods of analytical and/or numerical nature; and finally reinterpreting the results in terms of the original problems. In short, industrial mathematics is modelling and scientific computing of industrial problems. Industrial mathematicians are bridge-builders: they build bridges from the field of mathematics to the practical world; to do that they need to know about both sides, the problems from the companies and ideas and methods from mathematics. As mathematicians, they have to be generalists. If you enter the world of indus try, you never know which kind of problems you will encounter, and which kind of mathematical concepts and methods you will need to solve them. Hence, to be a good "industrial mathematician" you need to know a good deal of mathematics as well as ideas already common in engineering and modern mathematics with tremen dous potential for application. Mathematical concepts like wavelets, pseudorandom numbers, inverse problems, multigrid etc., introduced during the last 20 years have recently started entering the world of real applications. Industrial mathematics consists of modelling, discretization, analysis and visu alization. To make a good model, to transform the industrial problem into a math ematical one such that you can trust the prediction of the model is no easy task.

In this book, a wide range of problems concerning recent achievements in the field of industrial and applied mathematics are presented. It provides new ideas and research for scientists developing and studying mathematical methods and algorithms, and researchers applying them for solving real-life problems. The importance of the computing infrastructure is unquestionable for the development of modern science. The main focus of the book is the application of mathematics to industry and science. It promotes basic research in mathematics leading to new methods and techniques useful to industry and science. The volume also considers strategy-making integration between scientists of applied mathematics and those working in applied informatics, which has potential for long-lasting integration and co-operation. The integration role is regarded here as a tool for consolidation and reinforcement of the research, education and training, and for the transfer of scientific and management knowledge. This volume operates as a medium for the exchange of information and ideas between mathematicians and other technical and scientific personnel. The book will be essential for the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration between applied mathematics and science, engineering and technology. This book gathers peer-reviewed contributions submitted to the 21st European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, ECMI 2021, which was virtually held online, hosted by the University of Wuppertal, Germany, from April 13th to April 15th, 2021. The works explore mathematics in a wide variety of applications, ranging from problems in electronics, energy and the environment, to mechanics and mechatronics. Topics covered include: Applied Physics, Biology and Medicine, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Economics, Finance and Insurance, Energy, Production Systems, Social Challenges, and Vehicles and Transportation. The goal of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) conference series is to promote interaction between academia and industry, leading to innovations in both fields. These events have attracted leading experts from business, science and academia, and have promoted the application of novel mathematical technologies to industry. They have also encouraged industrial sectors to share challenging problems where mathematicians can provide fresh insights and perspectives. Lastly, the ECMI conferences are one of the main forums in which significant advances in industrial mathematics are presented, bringing together prominent figures from business, science and academia to promote the use of innovative mathematics in industry.

The 15th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry was held in the agreeable surroundings of University College London, just 5 minutes walk from the British Museum in the heart of London, over the ?ve warm, sunny days from 30 June to 4 July 2008. Participants from all over the world met with the commonaimofreinforcingthe roleofmathematics asanoverarching resource for industry and business. The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 countries, most of them participating with either a contributed talk, a minisymposium pres- tation or a plenary lecture. ‘Mathematics in Industry’ was interpreted in its widest sense as can be seen from the range of applications and techniques described in this volume. We mention just two examples. The Alan Tayler Lecture was given by Mario Primicerio on a problem arising from moving oil through pipelines when temperature variations a?ect the shearing properties of wax and thus modify the ?ow. The Wacker Prize winner, Master’s student Lauri Harhanen from the Helsinki University of Technology, showed how a novel piece of mathematics allowed new software to capture real-time images of teeth from the data supplied by present day dental machinery (see ECMI Newsletter 44). The meeting was attended by leading ?gures from government, bu- ness and science who all shared the same aim – to promote the application of innovative mathematics to industry, and identify industrial sectors that o?er the most exciting opportunities for mathematicians to provide new insight and new ideas.

Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.

This publication showcases the work of UK mathematicians and statisticians by describing industrial problems that have been successfully solved, together with a summary of the financial and/or societal impact that arose from the work. The articles are grouped by sector, and include contributions to climate modelling, engineering and health. The articles are based on Impact Case Studies that were submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a UK government sponsored exercise that assessed the research quality within UK universities. There are many publications in the realm of ‘popular mathematics’ as well as a vast research literature that underpins this. This work is aimed at a middle ground between these two. Articles contain some mathematical detail, but the emphasis is on telling the story of a successful collaboration between academia and industry and on the results obtained. UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics is therefore accessible to a wide readership with interest in the applications of mathematics and statistics to problems of industrial importance and to those interested in how mathematics and statistics research affects our everyday lives and leads to economic and societal benefits.
