Architecture and Ideology consists of twenty-two essays arranged in four thematic units: Ideological Context of Architecture, City and Power, Morphology and Ideological Patterns, and Designers and Ideology. The subjects that are investigated and elaborated are connected with the influences of different 20th century political and social ideologies on urban development and the architecture of various European cities, from the east and the west. The authors are professors and scientific researchers from various European universities and institutions and theoreticians of architecture, architectural historians and aestheticians, and architecture practitioners. Since the mid 1970s, there has been an extraordinary renewal of interest in early modern architecture, both as a way of gaining insight into contemporary architectural culture and as a reaction to neoconservative postmodernism. This book undertakes a critical reappraisal of the notion of modernity in Mexican architecture and its influence on a generation of Mexican architects whose works spanned the 1920s through the 1960s. Nine essays by noted architects and architectural historians cover a range of topics from broad-based critical commentaries to discussions of individual architects and buildings. In a time of mass-mediated modernity, the city becomes, almost by definition, a constitutively ‘mediated’ city. Today, more than ever before, the omnipresence of media in every sphere of culture is creating a new urban ontology, saturating, fracturing, and exacerbating the manifold experience of city life. The authors describe this condition as one of 'hyper-mediation' – a qualitatively new phase in the city’s historical evolution.
