Eppa Hunton II (1822-1908), was a prominent figure in Virginia throughout his career as a lawyer, soldier and Congressman. Although his autobiography was written mainly for his family it contains much to interest the general reader and Civil War historian alike. In 1861 Hunton was among the delegates to the Virginia Succession Convention and voted for secession; immediately thereafter he was commission as a colonel in the 8th Virginia Infantry. He saw much action in the early years of the war, at First Bull Run and the battle of Ball’s Bluff; he commanded a brigade in Longstreet’s Corps under Pickett. His memories of Pickett’s charge in which he was wounded are among the ever written, having recovered he served in the Army of Northern Virginian as a Brigadier General at Cold Harbor and the defence of Petersburg. He was again wounded at the battle of Sayler’s creek and captured by Union forces. A gem of a Civil War memoir.

Richard Stoddert Ewell is best known as the Confederate General selected by Robert E. Lee to replace "Stonewall" Jackson as chief of the Second Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. Following the immediate critical success of Lee’s Dispatches, author Douglas Southall Freeman was approached by New York publisher Charles Scribner’s Sons and invited to write a biography of Robert E. Lee. He accepted, and his research of Lee was exhaustive: he evaluated and cataloged every item about Lee, and reviewed records at West Point, the War Department, and material in private collections. In narrating the general’s Civil War years, he used what came to be known as the “fog of war” technique—providing readers only the limited information that Lee himself had at a given moment. John William Dear was born in 1845 into a close-knit farming family in Northern Virginia. After the Civil War, when he fought as a Confederate soldier with Mosby's Rangers, he went West. For fifteen years, until his premature death, Dear lived a tumultuous life in the West as one of the last fur traders on the Upper Missouri and as the longest serving, government-appointed Indian Trader to Red Cloud's Sioux.
