Living in this world of chaos I have often found myself in battle or a struggling conflict where I have strived to keep my head above the water. Battle, behind weary battle I found myself on the losing side. Angry, confused, beat up, and bruised, I prepare for another battle, hoping to come out the victor. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1969 I was commissioned as an officer in the Marines. I served an interesting tour of duty in Southeast Asia in 1972, during which time I was in and out of six different countriesincluding Vietnam. A greenhorn lieutenant when I landed, I was eventually promoted to captain. Because of my God given take charge personality and a few very junior officer notable accomplishments I found myself frequently being handpicked for special assignments. I saw action with seven different unitssome good some badsome ugly. I saw men die. I saw capable men withered by fatigue, brave men crippled by fear. Since I served, more than forty years ago now, I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and getting to know hundreds of fellow-Vietnam Vets; short term acquaintances, professional colleagues, neighbors, close friends, family members. Although our individual Vietnam stories are unique and intensely personal, I have come to realize that a common thread runs through most of them. For more than twenty-five years I have been asked to formally speak to sundry civic organizations, history classes, and social gatherings. As a result of fielding thousands of audience questions and listening to their spontaneous reactions to my talks I have learned what people are interesting in hearing. I have seen their reactions to my version of Americas Vietnam experience. I know whats interesting and whats not; whats important to those who werent there, ordinary people who merely wonder what it was like. I have enjoyed two successful careers and am currently embarked upon my third. I have fired most of lifes best bullets, emptied most of my chosen weapons most precious magazines, drained my fullest canteens, exhausted most of my allotted time on this fair planet we call earth. I want to share a few of the stories of men I served with, men I came to know later in life, men I loved as brothers-in-arms surviving in harms way; or men who were simply Crazy Vietnam Vets (like me) with a special story to tell. Men JUST like meonly different! Ours are interesting up and down tales of wonder and weird, of good times and bad. I am happily married to a seasoned school nurse, am the father of three college educated sons, and have two fine grandsons. I live in Blanco, Texas about forty miles due west of Austin. This is a story of a total reset of my life. It is about a divine intervention. I had a battery of medical test done and was given a clean bill of health. It was Friday in mid- August. The plan was to go up to Lake Erie and fish for white bass, or at least that was my plan. It turned out that the Lord had a different plan. You see, a few hours after I left my cardiologist office, I was in the emergency room. A few hours after that I was in full cardiac arrest, dead. I was dead for 12 minutes. During those minutes the Lord reviewed my life with me. He fixed some things in my life while I lay there and, then He assigned some things to me to fix. In addition, he gave me this book. He dictated it to me from the title to the last word. Now, understand that this is not the entirety of the shenanigans in my life. There are a lot more. The rest will remain between Him and me. What is written here is intended for the children of God, especially men, as both an example of God’s mercy and guidance, and also a warning of how sin and disobedience can lead to many evils including generational curses, misses purpose and even death. I hope that this intimate look into my life will act as a beacon pointing the way to the Lord of redemption, reconciliation and resurrection. I pray and believe that this book blesses you as much as it has blessed me.

In 2005, while I was taking a shower, God gave me the idea to research the Bible and find all the Scriptures describing the names of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This was not some idea I came up with; I believe that this was inspired by the “mind of God.” This idea was not mine but His! Truly, I am not the author because the Scriptures used in He Is are from the inspired Word of God. I read the entire Bible three times, wherein I found over 1,400 verses for this offering. Although we have spent hundreds of hours on research, God must receive all the glory and honor of this accredited work. I believe those who may never pick up a Bible will be able to become better acquainted with the Lord Jesus Christ through this reading. Exodus 3:13–14: And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. This verse is used to identify God as “The Great I Am,” and truly He is the Great I Am! However, the emphasis should be on the word “that” because God in His entire splendor cannot be described with just HE IS—I AM!
