The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by China in 2013, carries and projects powerful regional dimensions and transformations, with short- and long-term global, national and local consequences. The BRI’s regional significance lies in its designation and creation of several cross-border corridors that originate from inside China and extend out into its neighbouring countries, and those farther afield in Asia, Africa and Europe. Through driving and facilitating new trade and infrastructure connections along and beyond these corridors, the BRI has begun to reshape the master processes of globalisation, urbanisation and development by affecting the economic, social and spatial fortunes of many countries and cities. This book serves two purposes. First, through a new framework and three case studies, it examines the BRI’s impacts on globalisation, urbanisation and development via the China-Europe Freight Train, the paired construction of a new city and railway across the China-Laos borderland and the port-park-city development corridor between Djibouti and Ethiopia. Second, the comparative analysis and evidence guide the book to advance policy recommendations for targeted stakeholders that can potentially turn the BRI into a global public good with greater benefits and fewer risks.

From 1998 to 2018, China had three political-economic crises, resulting in bureaucratic paralysis. It was at such junctures that China's leadership launched initiatives, like the Western Development Program, that mobilized state and market actors to expedite globalization and revive economic growth. In The Belt Road and Beyond, Min Ye reevaluates the common tendency to attribute China's Belt and Road to individual leaders' strategic ambitions, using state-mobilized globalization as a comparative framework and investigative tool to understand Chinese capitalism. State-mobilized globalization has helped sustain China's high-growth economy and social-political stability, while also sparking some political backlash. In order to succeed in globalization, the author argues, China's state mobilization must readapt to global circumstances. She sheds light on the tactics China used to spring from a crisis-stricken middle economy to a formidable global power, implicating not only China, but also the world.

Beyond Europe is an interesting collection of the research papers in the area of International Relations, which provides an overview of the modern world in the light of various theories explaining the mode in which certain countries function on the international arena. Despite the fact that the selection feels somewhat random at first, and the connection between the chosen topics is not immediately clear, the collection does manage to form a coherent whole. The discrepancies, lines of divisions and prevalence of the particularisms do, in the end, create the global picture of the contemporary world, which is far from unified - even the agreements that are necessary for the future existence of the world can not be achieved at this stage. It is exemplified by the agreements and syndicates established by certain players on the international area that serve nothing else but to create or maintain the domination of one country over the other. One of the few conclusions that one might come to after reading the volume is that the lack of empathy and class consciousness on the international area withholds the weaker players from development, and that modern politics laced with the neoliberal mode of thinking very unfortunately take neocolonialism for a more positively resounding concept of globalization. The collection takes a non-Eurocentric approach and does not moralize, which can be considered as an advantage of the book. Piotr Kwiatkiewicz
