First published in 1909, this book collects the author’s lectures on the ‘problem of evolution’ and the resultant debate. The first considers the validity of the Theory of Evolution and whether it is in opposition to the Christian view of creation. The second examines the assertion that evolution harmonises only with Monism rather than Theism and which of the two views is preferable. It also looks at the popular identification of Darwinism with evolution, if it is scientific and the results this leads to. The third looks at man’s position in the problem of evolution — whether we are bound to bring in considerations higher than the zoological — and the evidence for our descent from ‘brutes’.

Pohle studied in Trier, Rome and even astronomy at Angelo Secchi and Würzburg (1879-1881). In 1878 he was ordained a priest. Pohle was initially in Baar , Switzerland teacher, then from 1883 to 1886 Professor of Moral Theology in Leeds , England, then a professor of exegesis and dogmatic, then from 1886 to 1889 professor of philosophy at the Philosophical-Theological University of Fulda . With Konstantin Gutberlet he founded in 1888 the Philosophical Yearbook. This volume contains the papers presented at a symposium on popula tion biology sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It was . held at the guest house of the University of Ttibingen at Oberjoch on May 15-19, 1983. Prior to this conference a small group of European biologists had met in Berlin (June 1981) and Pavia (September 1982) to discuss re search problems on the borderline between population genetics and evolutionary ecology. From the contributions and discussions at these meetings it became evident that the unification of approaches to evolutionary problems in population genetics and evolutionary ecology has not yet been suc cessful and requires further efforts. It was the consensus that a larger symposium with international participation would be helpful to con front and discuss the different approaches to population biology in order to assess "where we are now" and "where we should be going. " As a result an organizational committee was formed (F. Christiansen, S. Jayakar, V. Loeschcke, W. Scharloo, and K. W6hrmann) to iden tify topics that seemed, at least to them, to be fruitful in tackling problems in population biology. Consequently, a number of colleagues were asked to participate in the meeting. We have divided this book into chapters corresponding to the eight topics chosen. The volume begins with the relation between genotype and phenotype and is followed by a chapter on quantitative genetics and selection in natural populations.

Genetic constraints on adaptive evolution can be understood as those genetic aspects that prevent or reduce the potential for natural selection to result in the most direct ascent of the mean phenotype to an optimum. The contributions to this volume emphasize how genetic aspects in the transmission of traits constrain adaptive evolution. Approaches span from quantitative, population, ecological to molecular genetics. Much attention is devoted to genetic correlations, to the maintenance of quantitative genetic variation, and to the intimate relation between genetics, ecology, and evolution. This volume addresses all evolutionary biologists and explains why they should be wary of evolutionary concepts that base arguments purely on phenotypic characteristics.
