BOOK EXCERPT:
Eight horses, two rifles and gold coins without number are what Geoff Shine pays as the bride price for Sarah Blackford when he weds her in a Cheyenne ceremony of joining. But can the love of a Cheyenne half-breed for a white woman overcome the fears, hatreds and prejudices of the soldiers who man the Julesburg Army Encampment, or Geoff's betrayal by Major Hastings? Geoff and Sarah, along with their friends, Clay and Belinda Hanes, attempt to survive and thrive in the hostile Wyoming Territory in the early 1870s. Will Geoff and Sarah's bond be strong enough to withstand the differences in their backgrounds, or survive the desire of the camp commander's wife to force them into a Christian marriage ceremony?

BOOK EXCERPT:
When Kofi and Pam, a young couple living in urban Calgary, got engaged, they decided to honour their African traditions, travelling to Ruwa, Zimbabwe to perform the Lobola (Bride Price) Ceremony prior to the Western-style wedding ceremony they would have upon their return to Canada. The groom's father acts as the narrator in this cultural, social, and romantic expedition, taking us through the events leading up to and following the ceremony, and offering us a firsthand look at the often misunderstood and maligned ceremony itself. Between the often-amusing exploits of his Canadian family, experiencing the unpredictability of the African wildlife for the first time, and the historical insights he offers regarding the sometimes-surprising cultural differences they encounter, Jonas captures this pivotal period in his family's life with a unique narrative keepsake they will likely treasure for years to come. But it has a lot to offer those of us who aren't a part of this familial circle as well. Part romantic familial adventure and part anthropological study, Bride Price: Lobola Narrative and Interpretation is sure to engage your emotions, even as it informs.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume collects some of the best lectures at the African Literature Association's 25th annual conference held in 1999. The conference brought together for the first time a large number of scholars, creative writers and artists from Northern Africa and their counterparts from Sub- Saharan Africa. The conference and this collection highlight the inspiring and stimulating dialogue between two literary and cultural areas that have often been artificially compartmentalised. The essays draw suprising connections and illustrate the breadth and dynamism of African literature.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Marriage as Political Strategy and Cultural Expression is the first comprehensive study of Mongolian royal marriages from World Empire (1206-1279) to the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) in Asia. This study examines the Mongolian royal family's marriage strategies and the political implications of these royal marriages, specifically, the intermarriages between the Mongolian royal house and its allies, including the Onggirat, the Oirat, and other Mongol peoples as well as the Uighur State and Korea in Central and East Asia. This book concludes that the short lifespans of Mongol royalty after Khubilai Khan were the result of consanguineous marriage and inbreeding - genetic factors that contributed to the collapse of the Mongol dynasty.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Turkey, at the very intersection of Europe and the Middle East, comprises a plethora of ethnicities and minority groups. There is however very little official data about many of its chief minorities. The Zazas are one such group: a Kurdish people speaking the Zaza dialect, and living as a distinct people in the eastern Anatolian provinces. Originally followers of Zoroastrianism from c.700 BC, over the centuries the Zazas converted, often by force, to Sunni Islam or Alevism, which remain the key faiths of the Zazas today. While many Zazas have migrated to Turkey's major cities and beyond, the majority of the population remain in rural eastern Anatolia and have retained a society and culture largely untouched by the influences of the modern world. Mehmet S. Kaya here provides a thorough investigation of all aspects of Zaza life, including kinship, economy, culture, identity, gender relations, patriarchy and religion. His fieldwork among local communities in the Zaza area, together with insights drawn from the Kurdish and Turkish media, sheds light upon the ways in which this Middle Eastern minority has maintained its way of life and cultural identity. He observes the ways in which the Zazas govern their problems and conflicts outside of official legal administration and courts; the factors which make Zaza society adhere in the absence of formal authority; and the role of religion in daily Zaza life. Kaya also examines the concept of the Zazas as a 'stateless' people, and looks at the issue of the oppression of minority ethnic identities in the context of Turkish nationalism. The Zaza Kurds of Turkey provides access to the world of a little-known people who have so far been largely neglected in the academic literature. This important study will be of interest to the fields of Middle East Studies, Islamic Studies, Anthropology, and Minority and Diaspora Studies.
