This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.

The noctuidae of the world, a family with numerous important agricultural pests, comprises about a third of the entire order Lepidoptera. This new three-volume set is the first complete catalog for the world. About 38,000 named species (including known synonyms) are listed alphabetically under each genus name in over 1,000 pages of text. Genera area also listed alphabetically, but subfamily affiliations are noted for each of the valid names to enable users to segregate genera by subfamily. Valid names are noted in boldface. Synonyms are listed for each genus and species; the species synonyms are also listed alphabetically among the valid names, thus enabling users to make two kinds of searches in the text as well as in the index. The catalog provides citation data on all described names (other than infraspecific names), with references cited in the compete bibliography at the end. Reference is also made to more important papers on the biology, larvae, host plants, and illustrations for each species, again with full titles noted in the bibliography. The main host plants for each species, where known, are listed under each. Details of holotypes, where known, are also noted. The bibliography has entries for approximately 4,400 papers.

Annotation Since the 1960s, American and Canadian fisheries have been introducing salmonines such as rainbow trout and chinook and coho salmon to the Great Lakes in order to develop new recreational fisheries. In this study, Crawford (ichthyology, U. of Guelph) examines the effects of non-native fish populations on the Great Lakes ecosystem. He contends that the ongoing introduction of non-native salmonines poses an ecologically- significant risk and that the practice should be terminated. The volume is not indexed. This issue celebrates the 75th birthday ofÿ Dr. Lubom?r Masner, a source of knowledge, enthusiasm, and inspiration for systematic entomologists in all fields, but especially for students of Hymenoptera. His unflagging dedication to the study of the parasitoid wasps of the superfamilies Proctotrupoidea, Platygastroidea, and Ceraphronoidea has completely transformed our understanding of the richness and evolutionaryÿ history of these insects. His zeal and innovation in collecting have not only dramatically enhanced the basis for our understanding of hymenopteran diversity, but also contributed to the development of the Canadian National Collection of Insects into one of the premiere systematic entomology research institutions in the world. Twenty-six authors have contributed to this volume in 17 papers on the systematics of the families Braconidae, Ceraphronidae, Chalcididae, Eucharitidae, Eupelmidae, Eurytomidae, Figitidae, Mymaridae, Platygastridae, Vespidae, and Xiphydriidae. Six new genera and 33 new species are described, encompassing fossil material as well as species from the Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Australasian regions.
