This study is concerned with the time-honored problem of the change that is induced when money enters into the economy. As far back as Aristotle (Politics, pp. 1135-1143) the still-unanswered question regarding the dichotomy of the real-exchange and the monetary economy was raised. He contrasted Oeconomic, where people strive to obtain real utilities (household management), to Chrematistic, where they use money to make more money (art of wealth-acquisition): The true wealth consists of such values in use; for the quantity of possession of this kind, capable of making life pleasant, is not unlimited. There is, however, a second mode of acquiring things, to which we may by preference and with correctness give the name of Chrematistic, and in this case there appear to be no limits to riches and pos sessions. Trade does not in its nature belong to Chrematistic, for here the exchange has reference only to what is necessary to themselves. ( . . . ) In the case of Chrematistic, circulation is the source of riches. And it appears to revolve about money, for money is the beginning and end of this kind of exchange. Therefore also riches, such as Chre matistic strives for, are unlimited. ( . . . ) Oeconomic, not Chrematistic, has a limit ( . . . ;) the object of the former is something different from money, of the latter the augmenta tion of money ( . . .

This book is a collection of policy briefs produced from research presented at the 16th Conference on Urban Health in Xiamen, China, November 4–8, 2019, under the theme “People Oriented Urbanisation: Transforming Cities for Health and Well-Being”, co-organized by the Urban Health and Wellbeing (UHWB) programme of the International Science Council (ISC). The UHWB programme takes an interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral and systemic view on issues of health and wellbeing in cities which include the urban economy and finance systems, education, employment, mobility and transport, food, energy and water resources, access to public services, urban planning, public spaces and urban green, as well as social inclusion. Contributions to this book have been made by scientists from multidisciplinary research fields. The policy briefs in this book present the background and context of an urban health issue, research findings and recommendations for policy/decision-makers and action-takers. In some cases, they inform about relevant events and developments from the science community or important opinion pieces which address health emergencies, like the current COVID-19 pandemic. The book is intended for citizens and political decision-makers, who are interested in systems perspectives on urban health and wellbeing, examples of how to deal with the increasing complexity of cities and the accompanying environmental and social impacts of increasing urbanization. Furthermore, it hopes to inspire decision-makers to facilitate finding solutions, in order to reach the goal of advancing global urban health and wellbeing.

This book combines the field of economics —especially monetary theory— with other disciplines like ecology, physics, humanities, social sciences and development theory. This transdisciplinary approach makes the book a unique contribution for researchers, students, policy makers and professionals working in governmental or nongovernmental institutions, as well as anyone interested in society’s well-being and achieving a true social-ecological transformation. It is written in an accessible language in order to reach a broad audience. In 2015, more than 190 world leaders recognized that the world is on a “collision course” (Max-Neef) and committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many conferences and high-level meetings have been held since then, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is how to finance these goals. There is a widespread belief that coming up with more money for sustainable development will “do the trick”. Usually, the discussions focus on finding additional financial resources in order to achieve the goals faster. In this book it is argued that not only is more money needed, but it needs to be a different kind of money. The book demonstrates that ALL but one of the SDGs are directly linked to our monetary system, which —being completely unnatural— can be seen as the most important, but at the same time least recognized, reason for market failure. Many people think we just need to do more, faster, better. Very few say that we have done things fundamentally wrong and that the institutions and values which motivated us to do those things need to be changed. It will be concluded that only if we change our unnatural design of money to a more natural one, will we be able to reach these goals

Seasteads – artificial settlements on the open sea – represent a near-future chance for multiple societal restarts. Where nation states suffer from ineffectiveness and inefficiency, both politically and economically, and cannot be changed due to path-dependency and rigidity, the open sea is a clean slate. Here, we can test new ways of doing things differently. This book discusses the opportunities and challenges of seasteads. Its focus is on socio-philosophical, political, economic, and legal aspects of founding new small societies of pro-active and productive individuals and groups. An explorative exercise, this book presents paradigmatic ideas and suggestions for partial aspects of seasteads.

Money, Financial Institutions and Macroeconomics presents a comparative and international perspective on the current state of research in monetary theory, and the application of monetary theory to important policy issues. The main emphasis is on views stressing the importance of credit creation in the monetary process, in a tradition which arguably encompasses Wicksell, the later Swedes and the Austrians, through the later Hicks, the circuit school and contemporary post-Keynesians. In addition, however, there are distinguished contributions from economists with a more `mainstream' approach to the issues. The book is subdivided into four main parts: Part I reviews the theory of a monetary and credit economy; Part II explores alternative views on money and credit; Part III deals with monetary policy issues in North America; and Part IV discusses monetary policy issues in Europe. `Taken together, the contributions to this volume certainly bear out Hick's famous adage about the much closer relationship between `monetary theory' and `monetary history' than is the case in other branches of economic thought.'

This volume is devoted to the hysteresis phenomenon in economic relationships. This topic has received renewed attention in economics especially in the late eigh ties. Since the issue is not settled there is still a growing literature on it. The aim of this volume is to summarize the findings, present new results, and to draw attention to further research. All papers are written for this volume and are not published elsewhere. Capturing the voices of Americans living with student debt in the United States, this collection critiques the neoliberal interest-driven, debt-based system of U.S. higher education and offers alternatives to neoliberal capitalism and the corporatized university. Grounded in an understanding of the historical and political economic context, this book offers auto-ethnographic experiences of living in debt, and analyzes alternatives to the current system. Chapter authors address real questions such as, Do collegians overestimate the economic value of going to college? and How does the monetary system that student loans are part of operate? Pinpointing how developments in the political economy are accountable for students’ university experiences, this book provides an authoritative contribution to research in the fields of educational foundations and higher education policy and finance.

This book studies optimal economic growth in a closed economy which experiences non-stable population growth. The economy is described by means of a neoclassical growth model which distinguishes overlapping generations within the population. The basic neoclassical growth model is extended to include various types of technical change, as well as investment in human capital or education. The research described in this book connects the analytical tools of traditional growth theory with the actual demographic experience of most industrialized countries. The role of demographic processes in the growth theoretical literature is discussed in the next section. The discussion will show that growth theory needs to extend its scope through the construction of growth models which explicitly recognize demographic forces as a potential source of non-stationarities. This book constitutes a first attempt at such a demographic extension. 1.1 Growth theory and demographic change The theory of economic growth (e.g. Solow, 1970; Burmeister & Dobell, 1970; Wan, 1971) attempts to describe and to explain the long-run development of an economic system (or, in short, economy). An economic system is essentially dynamic in nature. Among the most important sources of dynamics in economics are the following: accumulation of capital (investment); technical change; population growth. Some of these dynamic forces are, at least in part, endogenous to the economic system (i.e. determined by economic variables).

project was the development and application of a model of central and local government behavior. It was carried out in collaboration with the Dutch Department of Home Affairs, during the period September 1985 - April 1987. The project's aim was the study of the determinants of local government decisionmaking in the Netherlands and the implications of so-called intergovernmental relations for local government behavior. During that project I was assisted by Sander Helder and Marc Tigche1aar. The results of that project appeared in a book, co-authored by Frans van Winden, entitled Gemeentefinancien en Gedecentra1iseerde. Bes1uitvorming(Loca1 Public Finance and Decentralized Decisionmaking). This book is, for the time being, the end product of my research on government behavior. Much more research is needed on the study of government behavior and the application of models which, from an economic point of view, focus on the implications of the interaction between economics and politics. The knowledge of this process is not only interesting as such, but also from a practical point of view. without a good positive analysis of the behavior of the government in modern industrialized economies it is neither possible to see through its operations nor to use its policies as an effective instrument in the pursuit of economic targets.

Es wird untersucht, wie die drei Komponenten der Nachhaltigkeit, die soziale, die ökologische und die ökonomische Nachhaltigkeit, umgesetzt werden können. Aus der Vielzahl der Forschungsbeiträge zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit wird im vorliegenden Band eine Auswahl präsentiert, die im Einflussbereich der Herausgeber der Schriftenreihe "Lingener Studien zu Management und Technik" bis zum Jahr 2019 entstand.
