This yearbook is a collection of important articles by demographers and economists from CASS and other top research and policy institutes in China. Several of the articles in this volume are based on major labor and population surveys carried out in recent years.

This English-language volume is an edited collection including several translations of articles from the 2008 and 2009 Chinese-language volumes of the Green Book of Population and Labor. In this second volume of the yearbook series, demographic scholar and economist Cai Fang offers policy guidance to the central government for an era of less favorable demographic circumstances than those experienced in the past. These papers consider how the Chinese economy can prosper despite a labor supply that is no longer “infinite,” and they propose ways that China might reap the benefits of a “second demographic dividend.”

This English-language volume is an edited collection of articles from the 2010 Chinese-language volume of the Green Book of Population and Labor. It examines recent developments in the Chinese demographic transition and its implications, especially for the labor market. The global financial crisis in 2008 and 2009 impacted the Chinese labor market during and after its occurrence; it hit the real economy and caused lay-offs for urban workers and a mass exodus of migrant workers from the non-agricultural workplace. The Chinese economy recovered quickly, thanks to the government’s fiscal stimulus package. It was impressive to see social protection programs implemented by the central and local governments with the interests of vulnerable people in mind. This volume intends to draw some lessons from the experiences and to discuss the trends of the labor market and social protection in the post-crisis period by focusing on three issues: policy measures, challenges to future growth, and the vulnerability of factions within the labor market.

This English-language volume is an edited collection of articles selected from the 2011 and 2012 Chinese-language volumes of the Green Book of Population and Labor. This volume starts with a chapter that explores the trajectory and future of China's demographic changes, as well as the role population projections should play in population policy through a comparison of data from the Sixth Population Census conducted in China and the United Nations population projection. Other topics discussed in this volume include changes in fertility and their implications to the labor market; demographic transition and its contribution to economic growth; employment structure and its problems; and reform of the labor market. This volume intends to draw lessons from the experiences and discuss trends of the labor market and social protection. Chinese Research Perspectives on Population and Labor is a co-publication between Brill and Social Sciences Academic Press (China).

This first English edition of The China Economy Yearbook, edited by standout economists Liu Guoguang, Wang Luolin and Li Jingwen, includes leading economic studies from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, and other economic research institutions in China. The articles in the yearbook investigate the Chinese economy in the past year from various perspectives, ranging from decision making at the macro level to key industries at the medium level, including real estate, foreign trade, the automotive industry, financing, and investment. This volume also includes special chapters on the economies of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

Many agree that rapid urbanization in China in the late 20th and early 21st centuries is a mega process significantly reshaping China and the global economy. China’s urbanization also carries a certain mystique, which has long fascinated generations of scholars and journalists alike. As it has turned out, many of the asserted Chinese feats are mostly fancied claims or gross misinterpretations (of statistics, for example). There does exist, however, an urbanization that displays rather uncommon "Chinese" characteristics that remain to inadequately understood. Building on his three decades of careful research, Professor Kam Wing Chan expertly dissects the complexity of China’s hukou system, migration, urbanization and their interrelationships in this set of journal articles published in the last ten years. These works range from seminal papers on Chinese urban definitions and statistics; and broad-perspective analysis of the hukou system of its first semi-centennial; to examinations of migration trends and geography; and critical evaluations of China’s 2014 urbanization blueprint and hukou reform plan. This convenient assemblage contains many of Chan’s recent important works. Together they also form a relatively coherent set on this topic. They are essential readings to anyone serious about gaining a true understanding of the prodigious urbanization in contemporary China.

The China Society Yearbook (2006) provides analysis of and commentary on social issues in contemporary China, broken down into chapters on different aspects of China’s social development, including change in social structure, population growth, employment, standard of living and education.

The idea of only one way leading to a modern society seems to be hardly tenable. But even if we agree to this, our theories and terms describing modernization are gained on our own Western history. So social science has to reconsider its basic terms to describe China’s modernization, and maybe even the understanding of modernization itself. The second of two volumes on China’s modernization collects articles by leading Chinese and Western scientists focusing on the main conflicts and differences this process involves. In the first section – “On Contemporary Theory of Modernization” – Manussos Marangudakis represents Shmuel N. Eisenstadt’s concept of “Multiple Modernities and the Theory of Indeterminacy”, one of the best elaborated perspectives on modernity. “Changing China: Dealing with Diversity”, the second section, examines how China copes with dissent and discusses the significance of law and a civil society. Merle Goldman begins with “Dissent of China’s Public Intellectuals in the Post-Mao Era”. The “Modernization of Law in China – its Meaning, Achievements, Obstacles and Prospect” is the subject of Qingbo Zhang. Scott Wilson presents a Gramscian analysis of civil society in “China’s State in the Trenches”. And Francis Schortgen and Shalendra Sharma study how China is “Manufacturing Dissent: Domestic and International Ramifications of China’s Summer of Labor Unrest”. “Neoliberalism and the Changes in East Asian Welfare and Education” is the focus of the third section. Beatriz Carrillo Garcia investigates the “Business Opportunities and Philanthropic Initiatives” in China. “Time, Politics and Homelessness in Contemporary Japan” is the subject of Ritu Vij. Different school books show the “Educational Modernisation Across the Taiwan Straits” by David C. Schak. And Ho-fung Hung discusses the role of China in globalization following the question: “Is China Saving Global Capitalism from the Global Cri-sis?” The additional rubric “On Contemporary Philosophy” involves three articles about “International Development, Paradox and Phronesis” by Robert Kowalski, “The World in the Head” by Robert Cummins, and “Communication, Cooperation and Conflict” by Steffen Borge. HUANG Yiping is Professor of Economics at the China Center for Economic Research, National School of Development, Peking University, China. He is also an adjunct professor at the Australian National University and a member of the China Finance 40 Forum. His current research focuses on macroeconomic policy, international finance and rural development. CAI Fang is Director, Professor and Fellow at the Institute of Population and Labor Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China. He serves as Vice Chairman of the China Population Association. His current research focuses on China’s labor migration, population and development, economic reform, income distribution and poverty.

Transforming the Chinese Economy is a translated collection of articles providing a look at how scholars in China have been assessing their country's recent economic history. This volume, as well as the others in the SSRC series, provide western scholars with an accessible English language look at the state of current Chinese scholarship, and as such, do not simply provide information for the direct study of economic issues, but also for meta-level analysis of the interplay of China's policy, scholarship, and economy. Specifc topics include banking and finance, inequality of growth, and women's role in the workforce.
