BOOK EXCERPT:
Summerville, once a bustling town nestled amidst rolling hills and verdant fields, was now a spectral husk. The vibrant colors of life had been replaced by a monochromatic palette of gray and brown. The once-bustling streets were now silent, save for the eerie creak of abandoned doors and the distant, guttural moans of the undead. A nuclear holocaust had ravaged the land, leaving a desolate wasteland in its wake. A handful of survivors clung to life within the confines of the old hospital. Susan, a seasoned survivalist with a steely gaze, led the group. Her knowledge of wilderness survival and her unwavering determination had kept them alive in the face of overwhelming odds. Beside her stood Dan, a former Marine with a scarred face and a grim demeanor. His military training and physical prowess were invaluable assets. Johnny, a young medic with a gentle heart, tended to the wounded and sick. And finally, there was Dr. Mason, a surgeon who had weathered the storm in the hospital's basement. His medical expertise was essential for keeping the survivors healthy. Despite their efforts to fortify the hospital, the undead were relentless in their pursuit. Every day was a battle for survival. The survivors would venture out into the ruined city to scavenge for supplies, their hearts pounding with fear as they navigated the treacherous streets. The air was thick with the stench of decay, and the constant threat of being overrun by the shambling horde kept them on edge. One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, eerie shadows across the desolate landscape, the survivors huddled together in the hospital's makeshift command center.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book brings together an international group of artists and writers to respond to the question of how our new world orders force us to reconsider urban walking and urban spaces in ways which extend into the digital sphere of online dialogue and screen sharing. In their reflections on walking cities in lockdown, the artists and writers contributing to this book share a number of complementary themes. Key to this is the question of how we walk in post-pandemic cities and how such walking might motivate or be motivated by transgressive, atomised or collective thoughts, affects, relations and experiences. Here we see how navigating cities in lockdown requires us to re-territorialise, improvise, create and de- or re-politize. There is, for example, a clear distinction between the severe lockdown measures that were introduced in Cape Town and the liberal appeal to good citizenship that northern hemisphere cities such as Stockholm chose to rely on. These measures impact on the way we experience urban walking and, in each case, lead to deeper reflections about the heightened presence of ideological structures embedded within the urban.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A fascinating read for anyone from general readers to hardcore fans and scholars, this encyclopedia covers virtually every aspect of the zombie as cultural phenomenon, including film, literature, folklore, music, video games, and events. The proliferation of zombie-related fiction, film, games, events, and other media in the last decade would seem to indicate that zombies are "the new vampires" in popular culture. The editors and contributors of Encyclopedia of the Zombie: The Walking Dead in Popular Culture and Myth took on the prodigious task of covering all aspects of the phenomenon, from the less-known historical and cultural origins of the zombie myth to the significant works of film and literature as well as video games in the modern day that feature the insatiable, relentless zombie character. The encyclopedia examines a wide range of significant topics pertaining to zombies, such as zombies in the pulp magazines; the creation of the figure of the zuvembie to subvert decades of censorship by the Comics Code of Authority; Humans vs. Zombies, a popular zombie-themed game played on college campuses across the country; and annual Halloween zombie walks. Organized alphabetically to facilitate use of the encyclopedia as a research tool, it also includes entries on important scholarly works in the expanding field of zombie studies.

"Ancient legends, Mystic Charms & Superstitions of Ireland" by Lady Wilde (the pen-name for Jane Wilde) is perhaps one of the best compilations of Irish lore ever published. Yet, it was almost lost to time. Ireland is a country full of myths and magic, and Wilde has managed to write an engaging and yet still succinct summary of the most important aspects of it. With a culture as rich as that of the Irish, it's a truly remarkable feat to be able to have it all at one's fingertips the way it is thanks to Lady Wilde's work.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Like pioneers in Earth’s past, Terry and his wife came to the red planet seeking their fortune. But others came too, ready to prove— There was death above. The Martian Sand Vulture swooped and hissed and twitched its barbed, poisonous tail in the thin air. There was death below. The man lay cradled in the pebbly sand. Red sand that matched the color of his hair and the color of the blood oozing slowly from the hole in his forehead and trickling greasily along the inside of his punctured head-bubble. The air whistled thinly through the corresponding hole in the bubble as the oxygen converter tried vainly to maintain the proper breathing mixture. There was death in the muzzle of the gun dangling nonchalantly from the tall man’s gloved hand. It grinned from his face, etched in the sardonic twist that the purple scar gave to his right cheek. It danced in the emotionless distances of his eyes.
